The Marineland LED BIO-Wheel Aquarium Kit combines many of the latest improvements in lighting technology with existing filtration and heating. These technologies are combined in a good-looking and sleek package. The Marineland LED BIO-Wheel Aquarium Kit provides everything (except gravel, decor and fish) to start and maintain a successful freshwater aquarium.

The Claims
Marineland claims that this kit integrates some of its newer technology (LED lighting) with its well-established BIO-Wheel filtration to provide a complete aquarium system that is easy to install and operate.

The Test
I tested the 20-gallon Marineland LED BIO-Wheel Aquarium Kit by setting one up from the box according to the instructions. For beneficial bacteria, I used sand from an existing tank and filter material from another existing tank; in addition, I treated the new water to remove chlorine and chloramines, and I dosed the tank with live bacteria to get the nitrogen cycle started. I added all the fish at once: 20 cardinal tetras, 10 featherfin rainbows, eight honey gouramis, six cory catfish and some nerite snails. I ran the tank for three months and fed the fish once or twice a day, but I did not feed them at all one day a week.

The Results
Even with a much higher fish load than would normally be recommended, the Marineland LED BIO-Wheel Aquarium Kit performed excellently. The tank itself has sleek lines, with a thin top and bottom plastic edges. The BIO-Wheel filtration system has been around for many years, and it performed perfectly throughout the entire test. There was never any reading for ammonia or nitrite, and nitrates stayed at around 20 parts per million. After a few days of initial cloudiness, most of which was due to the fine sand I used from another tank, the tank was always crystal clear.

The best new aspect of the Marineland LED BIO-Wheel Aquarium Kit is the LED (light emitting diode) lighting system. The LED system is built into the hood, and it does not give off much heat, nor does it require either the ballast or reflectors that make fluorescent hoods bulky. The LED lighting system makes only a small bulge in the top of the hood, which gives the entire tank a clean and sleek look. The light is fine for viewing the fish, and even though Marineland says that the tank was not designed for live plants, I used some low-light plants (Nymphaea lotus and water sprite), and they did just fine (I recommend fake plants, though, unless you have a lot of experience with low-light plants).
