Anubias species Plant Profile

Anubias are a very popular aquarium plant, primarily because they are very easy to grow, even in conditions of low light. It is actually better to keep Anubias in shaded places in the aquarium, as too much light will not make the plant grow any faster, and algae will cover the leaves. Anubias have very tough leaves, and often Anubias will be able to survive in aquariums with plant-eating fish such as silver dollars or African cichlids. The roots (actually a rhizome) of Anubias should not be planted deep in the aquarium substrate, as they have a tendency to rot. Some hobbyists simply tie the Anubias to a piece of driftwood or rock with black cotton thread, as with Java fern, and by the time the thread dissolves the plant will have made a good holdfast.
