Hatchetfish are freshwater fish belonging to the family Gasteropelecidae. They are characterized by their large sternal region, and are known to be excellent jumpers. Hatchetfish will generally stay near the surface of the water, and aquariums housing them should have tight-fitting, well-sealed lids to prevent the fish from jumping out of the tank.
