Marathon County Public Library's 650 gallon saltwater aquarium.
A 650-gallon saltwater aquarium built by Las Vegas-based Acrylic Tank Manufacturers opened for public viewing at the Marathon County Public Library in Wausau, Wis. December 6.

"It'll give us an opportunity to let the children in the community develop an interest in natural science and that's really what it was about, the library should be fun, learning should be fun, and that's kind of what was the idea behind this," Marathon County Library Director, Ralph Illick told WAOW ABC 9 news.

The library was the recipient of the $35,000 tank thanks to a donation from the estate of Phyllis Donner, a resident of Wausau who died in 2011. ATM donated the livestock that is in the tank, which includes more than 30 species of fish and corals. The tank's frame and cover for the tank frame was donated by Crystal Finishing Systems, and Wausau's Kolbe & Kolbe Millwork donated the transportation of the tank and frame from Las Vegas to Wausau. The maintenance of the tank will be provided by Tankmates of Wausau and will be paid for by the Friends of the Marathon County Public Library and the Marathon County Public Library Foundation. The library initially wanted to be showcased on the Animal Planet show "Tanked." The network decided not to go with the library for the show, but the company that the show chronicles, ATM, built the aquarium and donated the livestock that is in the tank.
