Public aquariums have become popular tourist attractions. |
The main section of Malaysia's largest aquarium, Langkawi Underwater World, has been closed after 600 fish; including sharks, stingrays and groupers, died, possibly of an intentional poisoning.
Langkawi police chief Mohamed Ali Jamaludin told The Associated Press that the water in the tanks smelled of gasoline and was believed to be contaminated with a pesticide or poison. Further adding that he thinks it was not negligence, but deliberate sabotage aimed at the popular tourist attraction.
The center's marine section and its main attraction — a 50-foot walkthrough tank containing 1.6 million gallons of sea water — have been shut since the incident.
Police are awaiting the results of a water analysis to determine the cause of the aquarium fish poisoning. In the meantime, the center has offered a reward to anyone who provides information leading to an arrest.
