Melamine, the chemical that contaminated pet food which led to the recent pet food recalls and pet deaths, has now been found in products used in livestock, fish and shrimp feed.
Uniscope Inc. has voluntarily recalled the binding agent products that are used in the livestock, fish and shrimp feed.
Uniscope said it does not think its products have made their way into any ornamental or aquarium fish feeds, although Uniscope spokesperson Charles Russell said that there is no way to know for sure. Russell said that the feed their products are used in are for large livestock operations and food fish farms, and this feed typically does not find its way to the general public.
Tembec BTLSR Inc. a contract manufacturer for Uniscope, makes the binding agents, AquaBond and Aqua-Tec II, which it distributes for Uniscope. Uniscope makes Xtra-Bond using ingredients supplied by Tembec.
The company said it has received no reports of any illness or deaths associated with these products and that no publicly available information would lead them to believe that these products pose any adverse consequences to the health of humans or animals.
