Green Texas Cichlids

Go “green” with this interesting North American native.

By Juan Miguel Artigas Azas

The green Texas cichlid (Herichthys carpintis) is not as well-known in the hobby as some of its cichlid cousins. However, it has been around in the hobby for more than 100 years. It is an interesting, active fish that has many traits aquarists should be aware of.

For instance, the green Texas cichlid is hardy for a cichlid and capable of enduring a wide range of water conditions. It spawns readily in captivity. It isn’t sensitive to aquarium water temperatures. All of these traits made the green Texas cichlid a favorite of early hobbyists.
