- Frequent restaurants that use sustainable seafood, shop for sustainable seafood products and support sustainable seafood practices. More Info>>
- Start your own reef fish or coral breeding project. Share your results as well as any eggs, fry, broodstock or frags with other hobbyists. More Info>>
- If you dive, use mooring buoys, rather than just dropping anchor on reefs. And avoid cutting across sea grass beds in your boat. More Info>>
- Go the ecotourism route when vacationing and stay at eco-friendly lodges, use local guides to tour reefs and use mass transit to get around. More Info>>
- Never step on, walk on or touch living corals. Leave seashells, corals and animals where you find them. More Info>>
- Join and support organizations dedicated to protecting coral reefs.
- Thoroughly research any fishes and corals you are considering keeping. Investigate every species’ point of origin, status (e.g., threatened, endangered, etc.) and ease of care in captivity (avoid corals or fishes with poor track records in captivity). More Info>>
- Never purchase red or pink corals (Corallium spp.) used in the jewelry and home décor industries. More Info>>
- Volunteer for local reef cleanup and restoration projects. More Info>>
- Report illegal activities, such as unlicensed fishing, exceeding legal catch limits, illegal boating or fishing in marine protected areas, illegal dumping, etc. More Info>>
- Use natural cleaning agents and fertilizers when possible to reduce harmful runoff. More Info>>
- Write your representatives in congress and ask them to support legislation favoring the protection of reefs and fishes. You can also write letters to your local newspapers and websites to help spread the word and to initiate action. More Info>>
