There Are Goldfish in My Boat!

The hardy goldfish can survive and breed just about anywhere — even in a pond made out of a broken canoe.

Usually, we are the ones in a boat. However, due to an unfortunate moving event and my wife’s seemingly odd idea, we have a canoe full of goldfish in our backyard.

Because of my thoughtlessness, a good old 17-foot fiberglass canoe was split almost in half during its move to our new home. Other than using it as a planter, my thought was to cut it into small pieces for the garbage. My wife Susan had other ideas. In early spring of 2006, she turned it into a backyard pond. I was skeptical. I doubted that her sealing would hold, but it did. She added some rock, pond plants, including water lilies, and then five 29-cent goldfish. They were only about an inch long. It was becoming an interesting experiment.
