November 2011 Aquarium Fish International Editor's Note

Aspire to be “Aquarist of the Month”

Printer Friendly

The “Aquarist of the Month” is a new department slated to start running in the January issue of Aquarium Fish International. Hobbyists (all experience levels, 18 or older, freshwater or saltwater) have an opportunity to display their aquarium acumen and win some prizes in the process.
You’ll need to email us a photo of yourself; it can be you in front of your tank, or just a simple head shot. Next, you’ll want to answer the questions below. Make your answers thought-provoking, but keep them brief.

1) What was the spark that got you into keeping fish?
2) Describe a favorite setup and why it’s your favorite.
3) Where do you see your hobby in the next five years?
4) What’s your favorite thing about fishkeeping?
5) What does responsible fishkeeping mean to you?

Email photos (they should be at least 3 by 4 inches at 300 dpi) and answers to FishChannel.com/Contact or post them at Facebook.com/AquariumFishInternational.

Reef-A-Palooza!
Reef-A-Palooza (RAP) is one of my favorite saltwater shows. Reef-A-Palooza 2011 is the weekend of October 22 and 23 at the Orange County Fairgrounds, in Costa Mesa, California. In 2010, RAP hit a new attendance mark with more than 3,200 visitors, making it the most heavily attended saltwater aquarium show in the country.

Reef-A-Palooza 2011 will offer a full complement of speakers, workshops and lots of vendors selling coral frags and hi-tech reefing equipment. For more information, read “See You at Reef-A-Palooza 2011” beginning on page 50.

“Tanked”!
“Tanked” is a new reality series on Animal Planet that airs Fridays at 9 p.m. Eastern/Pacific. The show follows Acrylic Tank Manufacturing co-owners and brothers-in-law Wayde King and Brett Raymer, as they motor around Las Vegas planning and installing one-of-a-kind themed aquariums at businesses and homes. For an in-depth examination at how “Tanked” became a reality, and Wayde and Brett’s individual takes on the hobby, read my exclusive interview “Tanked: A Reality Show for Aquarists,” starting on page 112.

I hope you decide to check out the above opportunities, which will enrich not just your hobby but others as well.
