The Diamond Tetra: A Tiny Treasure

These little fish are easy to care for and may just reproduce on their own in your tank.

By David A. Lass

The diamond tetra (Moenkhausia pittieri) is a perfect aquarium fish. It stays at a moderate size, can handle a fairly wide variation of pH and hardness, and is particularly hardy and long-lived. It eats just about everything, and unless it gets really hungry, it won't bother plants. Best of all, if the tank is heavily planted and there are not many other competing fish, sometimes diamond tetras will reproduce on their own without any effort from the hobbyist.
