In the 1960s, I was a marginally accomplished aquarist until my family moved to Germany, where I enjoyed tremendous success for seemingly inexplicable reasons. Occasional cloudy, unpleasant-smelling water and intermittent fish breeding success were replaced with clear water, vibrant plant growth and fish breeding faster than mosquitoes.
