Fun Fish for Beginners

Start with these species, and the hobby is sure to grow on you.

Most fishkeepers get into the hobby because of either seeing a really interesting fish that attracted their attention or seeing a really nice display tank somewhere. Either way, the reaction is to have the same at home. For me, it was seeing a rack of old metal-framed tanks in a drug store when I was just 3 years old. I loved the color and movement of the fantail goldfish in particular. For the next five years, I always had a fantail goldfish or a black moor in a 2-gallon bowl in my bedroom. Then I discovered tropical fish and received my first real tank as a gift from my parents. That attraction to fish with color and personality continues to this day, some four decades later.
