Shopping can be great fun, but it is an activity that becomes more demanding when there are technical, performance and reliability issues to consider. This is particularly true for aquarium hobby consumers because our choices will have a direct impact on the quality of life for the aquatic animals we keep, as well as our enjoyment of the hobby. All things being equal, the lowest price is often the deciding factor, but things are rarely equal in most product categories.
Because certain product categories represent more cost than others, I’m going to focus on these. But as a general rule, even items that are relatively inexpensive should not be purchased only on the basis of least cost. There are always other considerations of equal or greater importance.
