All the wrasses are considered to be quite active, but members of the genus Thalassoma are hyperactive. On the reef, these labrids, typically referred to collectively as banana wrasses, are often seen dashing over the turbulent reef flat. In captivity, they dash from one end of the tank to the other. Watching one of these fish tends not to be a very relaxing experience.
Many of these fish display attractive colors that can dazzle the most jaded aquarist. However, they can also be very belligerent and predatory, making short work of an array of different invertebrates, as well as small fish tankmates. That said, banana wrasses definitely have a place in the more aggressive fish community aquarium, and some of the smaller species can also be trusted in a reef tank. Let’s go over the details.
