Aquascaping for the Fish

You look at the aquarium, but the fish have to live in it.

By Miller Morgan

Whether it’s your first aquarium or your fiftieth, planning the aquascaping is always part of the fun and excitement of being a fishkeeper. Even after doing it many times, not only is it still fun, but we also get better at it as a result of more experience.

The combination of our imagination and photos we’ve seen of really cool-looking setups, along with tanks we’ve seen in person, is enough to motivate at least some of us toward the aquascapes of our dreams. However, there is one thing that should take priority over every other aspect of planning any aquascape — the fish. In addition to knowing what fish you want to keep, you must know what their care requirements are.

Yes, you want the aquarium to have a certain look and feel. There’s nothing wrong with this, but if your aquascaping plans are incompatible with the needs of the fish, either your plans must change or you have to chose fish that will do well with the planned aquascaping.
