Postcards From MACNA 2010

Every Marine Aquarium Conference of North America I’ve attended has been first rate. I’ve been to Houston (2006), Pittsburgh (2007), Atlanta (2008) and now Orlando — and I have to say that the 2010 MACNA, hosted by the Orlando Reef Caretakers Association, ranks right up there with the best.

There was the usual vendor area, which was a beehive of activity, the talks were informative and entertaining, and the auction, receptions and banquet were outstanding. But two things made this MACNA different, at least from my perspective: 1) I only heard praise from attendees and vendors — not even one discouraging word and 2) the Marriott World Center is one of the best hotel-conference facilities to ever host a MACNA. I went swimming in the World Center’s gargantuan swimming pool, and I never go swimming at these things. It felt more like a vacation than a conference, or even work for that matter.

I encourage you to attended MACNA XXIII, which takes place September 9 to 11, in Des Moines, Iowa. At the MACNA banquet, the Greater Iowa Reef Society’s video pitch offered this incentive: "Des Moines is only a "short” 12-hour drive from ...” Of course, this line brought the house down. But, really, what’s a 12-hour drive or a short plane ride compared to the reefkeeping knowledge and contacts you’ll make? If you’re interested in attending the 2011 MACNA in Des Moines, visit I’ll be there, and I look forward to meeting some of you.
