Great Fish for Kids to Keep

These small, colorful and active fish are easy to keep and interesting to watch.

By David A. Lass

There are so many beautiful and different fish available today that it can be difficult for kids (or adults) starting out in our wonderful hobby to decide what to keep. In this article, I will give some suggestions of good fish for kids to keep. In deciding what fish to include here, I have based my selections on the following criteria. The fish should be:

  • Active and colorful. You don't want drab fish that just sit there.
  • Relatively small as an adult. Often new hobbyists are not clear about the adult size of some fish and get fish that will grow too large for their tanks.
  • Interesting to watch.
  • Easy to breed. Fish having babies is one of the best things about our hobby.
  • Hardy and easy to keep. This means these fish are: adaptable to wide ranges of water pH and hardness, resistant to diseases and parasites, and also able to thrive on basic prepared flake foods.
