New Aquarium Fish Society Column.

By Patricia Knight

You may have had the opportunity to read last month’s “Clubs and Stores Working Together” by John Todaro, an article that preceded our first installment of our column discussing aquarium societies. We are glad to be starting this new column, “Secrets to Society Success,” which we hope will be beneficial not only to current aquarium society members but also those just thinking about joining. If you are in an aquarium club, the society column will have valuable information to help your club run smoother (especially if you happen to be actively involved or be a board member). And if you’re not yet in an aquarium club, you’ll get some insight about the goings-on at an aquarium society — and hopefully, you’ll end up wanting to join one!

In addition to John’s monthly discussion in the column, we will be keeping an updated list online of aquarium society events, such as one-time special meetings, conventions and more at FishChannel.com/Events. (Please note that monthly meetings will not be included on this webpage; however, these are listed in our “Aquarium Societies” section of the classifieds.)

And speaking of aquarium societies, we’d like to invite any societies out there — large or small — to send information to get listed in the society listings in our annual publication, Aquarium USA

There’s a lot worth taking a look at in this issue, but we especially want to bring this month’s article by Oliver Lucanus, “How to Create an Orinoco Habitat,” to your attention (bonus content). A lot of aquarists are interested in biotope tanks right now, and Oliver guides you through setting up this South American habitat in this article. Biotope tanks can make very interesting freshwater setups, so this may be worth an attempt if you haven’t tried your hand yet at a biotope setup. It takes some time and effort, but it would be well worth it to create such a beautiful tank at home. Enjoy!
