SPS: (abbrev.) SPS stands for small polyped stony corals. SPS corals include genera, including Acropora, which are major contributors to coral reef growth. Small polyped and large polyped stony corals are two categories of hard corals. SPS corals are more difficult to keep than large polyped stony (LPS) corals. They require more intense lighting and more water movement than LPS corals.
