Sponge filter: (n.) These are gentle filters that can clean aquarium but that are not dangerous to fry (other filters may suck in fry and kill them). Sponge filters are also beneficial in quarantine aquariums because they do not filter out medications. Sponge filters somewhat trap larger wastes (the mechanical filtration), but these filters work mainly on biological filtration by providing a place for beneficial bacteria to live. The bacteria convert wastes into less toxic wastes. The sponge filter is driven by an air pump.
