Invertebrate (n.) – An invertebrate (often shortened to “invert” in the aquarium hobby) is an animal that has no backbone. These animals include all corals, anemones, crabs, shrimp, snails, sponges, sea stars, clams, slugs, urchins, worms, etc. There are both saltwater and freshwater invertebrates for aquariums, although there are many more saltwater invertebrates that hobbyists keep in their aquariums.

The fish in our aquariums are not invertebrates, they are vertebrates.
