Carbon dioxide: (n.) Carbon dioxide (C02) is a gas composed of two oxygen atoms and one carbon atom. Carbon dioxide is used by plants during photosynthesis to make the sugar it needs to grow. Planted aquarium keepers often inject carbon dioxide (with a C02 injector) to provide their plants with enough carbon dioxide for good growth. Too much C02 in a system can suffocate fish.
