Beneficial bacteria: (n.) Beneficial bacteria present in aquariums metabolize dissolved organic compounds (fish food, fish waste, decaying plant leaves, etc.). The bacteria convert ammonia (which is deadly to fish) into nitrites, then into nitrates. Plants absorb nitrates, and nitrates are removed during water changes.
