Alkaline: (adj.) Alkaline water measures above 7.0 on the pH scale; also called “hard” water. Many African species, such as African cichlids, do well in aquariums with alkaline water. To create hard water for fish that require it, hobbyists add specific substrates and rocks to their aquariums. Most captive-bred fish can adapt to both acidic and alkaline conditions.
