I’ve been hearing about Facebook a lot in the news lately. For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, Facebook is a social networking website that allows users to create web pages detailing information about themselves, their interests, recent events and such.
Magazines and other websites are allowed to have Facebook pages, too. And it seems like everyone is on Facebook.
I have a personal Facebook account, and I’ve reconnected with numerous old friends through it. It’s a great way to stay in touch.
What caught my eye the other day was a news report that the number of Facebook users is now roughly equivalent in number to the entire population of the United States! Isn’t that amazing?
I think informational websites like FishChannel and social networking websites like Facebook can really help to expand the aquarium hobby.
What better way for fish hobbyists separated by time, space and the demands of everyday life to connect and share their hobby? I know that my own aquariumkeeping is always more enjoyable when I can share it with my friends and family. In fact, the 80-gallon aquarium I’m currently setting up has turned into a project that me and my dad are sharing.
With the opportunities to meet people, make friends, share information and interact with experienced hobbyists, websites like FishChannel and Facebook are making it easy to belong to a “fish club” without ever leaving your home computer. Check out the Fish eClub>>
FishChannel, FAMA magazine and AFI magazine all have Facebook pages. I’d like to build up our audience there so we can have some interactive events between the two websites.
If you already have a Facebook page, you should become a fan of any or all of our titles’ Facebook pages. As our number of fans increases, we’ll look to have some interactive features between the two sites. We might try a live chat with our editors or possibly even some contributors. We might even run a contest through Facebook, where you can sign up with Facebook and participate on Fishchannel.
