Hey Chad
Came to say hi! Anything new in your tank? We got an african gray parrot. She's great. Morgan the macaw is raging with hormones and the only one she wants to hang around with is the cockatoo. The rest of us in the family she seems to hate right now. She attacked me and bit both my hands tonight. It hurt so bad it brought tears to my eyes. Just doing a few blogs, the typing is making my bandaged fingers throb. I read that this behavior may go on for six weeks. If she keeps this bad behavior up she may get stuffed and roasted and served with orange raisin sauce, lol. That's enough typing and throbbing for me tonight. TGIF!

Hi Chad
Great to hear from you! I wish your news had been better, like everything was thriving. Do you hink the blenny is just hiding? I hate it when things seem to go belly up for no good reason! I lost all my open brains. They say they're suppose to be easy care but I beg to differ! I don't think I'm going to get any more of them. Have you checked your phosphates? I recently checked mine and they were elevated. I think I lost one of my montipora's because of it, and another got sick. I put a phosphate sponge in and the other one recovered. I can't think of anything if you say your water parameters are okay. Once again maybe run the problem by Nep2Ns PlumR. He's very helpful. I'm still a newbie who dosen't know a whole heck of alot. I wish you well through this problem. You still have a beautiful tank. Talk to you later my friend.

Chad man
What's up? We haven't blogged for a bit. I lost a few chromis to some unknown problem. I've also lost a whole colony of zoanthids. Something strip mined them. Chewed them right down to the rock. Saw a starfish previously unseen a few days ago. He was a chunky kind. Pretty small but not as tiny as those little white brittle star looking things that you need a magnifying glass to see. Poor thing only had one and a half legs but was still very much alive and moving around. I wonder if he was toxic and the chromis had been chewing on him. So much goes on in reef tanks that you never see and it leaves you dumbfounded. What a war zone! We have to take Morgan, our macaw to the vet tommorrow morning. She has some kind of a respiratory problem and has been wheezing. If she gets excited she really has to struggle to catch her breath, poor thing. It's probably going to cost a fortune. I'm sure they'll do x-rays, blood tests, cultures as well as the physical exam. It'll probably cost more than a people doctor. I just hope she's okay. They don't make any kind of a bird carrier big enough for a macaw that I have seen anyway. We're going to take her in a cardboard box. The trip is alittle over an hour and she'll probably have the whole box shredded before we even get there. Wish us luck! See ya for now.

Hi
That dancing walrus video was great! Thanks for that. I finally caught that big bristleworm a couple days ago. It was 3am and I was up and noticed movement in the tank. He was stretched up the side of the glass and after a few trys with the tongs I got him. I put in in the 10g tank where I figure he can't hurt anything. As big as he is he disappeared pretty quickly! Hope all is well with you and your tank. Take care, vote.

Been awhile, anything new? I've got a chromis that is blind, poor little guy. I think he got pistol shrimp whipped and took some bad brain damage. It happened about two weeks ago. I know there's either a pistol shrimp or a mantis that hitchhiked in because I hear the telltale snapping often. I think a mantis would have shown itself by now so I'm leaning more toward a pistol. They supposedly don't move far from their caves. His must be in the back of the tank because that's where the noise comes from. It isn't disease because none of the others show any signs. He hangs out at the top of the tank moving around to the corners. I put food right over him and he snarfs at it. If you wave your hands in front of him there is absolutely no response. The night it happened he looked so stressed out I thought he'd be dead by morning. He's still going though. Hope all is well, miss you. Vote.

Hi Chad
My maroon clown dosen't really have a choice. His anemone is up at the front of the aquarium. He loves his anemone so much that he'll never leave it. He just follows along where ever it takes him. The anemone had done a stint in the back of the tank where I couldn't see it and the clown went with it. Didn't see either for about two weeks. I couldn't reach the nem to feed it and it's light was poor back there so he eventually came back out, clownfish and all. We had a waterspout day before yesterday two towns over that left a bunch of boats belly up in the harbor. Some pretty big ones too. They say the spout was about 75 feet wide. Very weird severe weather for this area. Must have been cool sighting those tornadoes when you did! From a long distace they're pretty neat. Well pal, stay away from smoke and fire if you can. Vote for ya.

Hey Chad
How's it going? I've been laying low not doing much of anything. We've had some pretty crazy weather around here with bad thunderstorms, hail and even a few tornadoes touching down in some places. That usually doesn't happen around here. I got beat up doing a water change on the 24g. The new tiny pipsqueek of a clownfish kept attacking my arm and biting it. It tickles now but when he grows I bet it'll hurt. After he was done, the blenny came out and bonked me! I have to say, I wasn't feeling the love. Hope all is well with you. Have you started the SPS tank yet? Vote for ya.

That's too bad! Do you ever hear any snapping noises in the tank? I wonder if you have a mantis shrimp hiding somewhere. That could rip a head off. Maybe he died of natural causes and his head got scavenged. Who knows how old fish are when they get to us. A mystery indeed. Pond creature lives in your area too and has been telling me about the smoke from fires. I really feel for all of you, it must be horrible and very unhealthy. I hope they fires stay away from you and dissipate soon. Weather is getting more extreme I agree. We've wrecked the planet now it's getting it's revenge, lol. Vote buddy.

How are ya?
Nice picture of the clown. Stormy weather just hit us like a mallet. We had a thunderstorm rip through that actually caused a powersurge through the house. It blew out 2 of the metal halide bulbs and the x-box 360. The x-box came back on when tried. I haven't tried the bulbs until they completely cool off or they can fracture. I hope it's not permanant because they cost about $80 a bulb. The winds looked like a hurricane. Hopefully it got Jack's radio controlled planes out of the trees they've been sitting in for weeks, lol. Vote for ya.

We went to a radio controlled airshow today on Cape Cod. Boy they had some big ones! Some had a 10 ft or more wingspan and needed trailers for transport. Some of those people could really fly well too, doing incredible tricks that I'm sure no real plane could do. It was really neat to watch. There was a jet and the guy who flew that said he had others that he didn't bring with him that go 240 mph! That's radio controlled! I can't imagine how they can even keep track of it at that speed. He told us about another R/C airshow that was specializing in the jets in August. We told him how cool we though the jet he had with him was and he said you haven't seen anything yet, to go to the other show. I guess we'll be going to that too. Nothing fishy today! Vote Chad.

What will we find tommorrow? I've got 3 sets of hitch hicker tunicates. I actually thought the first one was an old worm tube. Then I saw it contract and close it's top. Alarm bells went off as I said what is this! It's not dead and it's not a worm. Proper research gave me the answer. Not very exciting but interesting creatures. They've grown a bit since I found them. Take care Chad. Vote.

Hey Chad
Yet another new creature arises from the tank depths. I noticed a bit of white on one of the corals and thought it was just finger leather mucus shed but decided to put the magnifiying glass to it anyway. Turns out it was a white starfish! He was hanging on for dear life in powerhead flow. Kind of looked like a tiny albino brittle star. He eventually succumbed to the flow, turned himself into a ball, swirled around the tank and disappeared somewhere in the rear. I'll probably not see him again for years if ever....Stay cool buddy. I never see my shrimp. You've got 100 gallons to hide in. He's probably just being shy till he gets used to the lay of the land. May take awhile. I got a blenny 3 weeks ago who I only see for a quick lightning strike for a bit of food then he's gone again. I haven't seen him for a total of a minute since I got him. I've got some kind of small fish fry that probably came in as eggs on a coral piece or something. I hope they aren't bluefin tuna, lol. Vote for ya.

That bristleworm is the size of a sea serpent! I don't mind the small one but if this one bites me, I'm gonna lose a finger, lol. I think he's too big for a trap and I'll never catch him so I guess he stays. Cool about the snails. Have you seen babies too? They say most snails don't spawn in captivity so that's a tribute to you and your tankkeeping! Your pictures should be a calander they're so nice. What kind of camera do you have? Nice clarity and close-ups. I especially love the ones of your Rygel, lol. Vote for ya. P.S. I remembered what skimmer I have, it's a Seaclone.

Hey
I fed the tank some fresh flounder last night and the bristleworm came out and tried to grab a piece away from the plate coral. My god he's a monster and I only saw part of him. He's at least a quarter of an inch thick and god knows how long. I tried to grab it with the tongs but he retreated too quickly. I wanted to dump him in the 10g hospital tank. I'm afraid he's going to bite me some day. I'm always messing around in the tank and it's awkward using the aquagloves. I hope he's the only one! Hope you're feeling alittle better. SPS
What are the dims on the acrylic tank? Sounds like it would probably be the better of the two tanks. The 50g has several draw backs to it. They can be overcome, but you'd end up with less tank for not alot less money. So which one will it be? The things that will be most important (and cost the most) will be lighting, water motion and a very good, oversized skimmer. What kind of money/time are you able to dedicate to this build? I didn't have a huge amount of money available to me all at once, so I spent over a year purchasing a piece of equipment here and a piece there. I guess my point is, If you want to do it right, it does cost a fair amount of money, especially with sps corals. But it's a pay me now or pay me later kind of thing. If you skimp up front, you'll just end up replacing the cheaper stuff later with what you needed to start with. Then it ends up actually costing you more. Since your tag is New Saltwater Hobby Dude I have to assume you don't have much/any experience keeping a reef. SPS corals are not at all forgiving. A shift in water temp of 4 or 5 degrees, a loss of power causing water flow to stop for a couple of hours can be the end of hundreds to thousands of dollars of livestock! I'm more than willing to help direct your build, but you've definately chosen to start at the pinacle. Not trying to discourage, just stating fact. So here's where we are, if you'll give me some answers to the questions above we'll start answering some of your lighting/water motion questions. Look forward to hearing back from you. Vote.

Hey NSHD
Miss Lizzy droped me a blog saying you're interested in setting up a system for keeping SPS corals, a 55g I believe. Definately doable. Is the 55 drilled/equipped with 1 or more overflows? For SPS you need very consistant water quallity and temps. The best thing to do would be to incorporate a sump below the tank for added water volume and to hide a skimmer etc. If it's not "reef ready" there are hang on overflow boxes if ya wanted to go that way. Some folks claim to have ahd problems with them but I never had any problems with the couple I've had. So what's the story here? Vote.

Hey buddy
You're too kind. I think your tank looks better than mine! I really don't feel qualified to give you the right answers. I've only been doing this for 6 months. I've referred you to a master of SPS reefs who is a really great guy. In fact, you've already got a few blogs of his. It's Nep2nsPlum. He's been doing SPS for 18 years and FAMA magazine is doing an article on him. I would hate to give you wrong answers and cost you alot of money and heartache. I have a red sea wavemaker, 4 Korelia pumps, an Ehiem canister filter which I took most of the substrate out of to lower nitrates, a simple HOB filter with charcoal and a phosphate pad and I forget what brand the protein skimmer is. My lights are now Outer Orbit halides 250 strenght 10,000K with actinic blue and purple T5's. So far I've just been lucky I think except I killed 2 acropora SPS's in Feb. I'm starting to get some tissue regression on my glowing brain coral. My advice is to take Nep's advice if you want perfection. I can think of no-one smarter at it! Here's a vote to your new 55gal show tank!

Hi Chad
Oh that's all so sad. Don't give up hope though cause you're really talented at this and you enjoy it so much. The money probably would have been lost some other way. We have a bay window that gives a greenhouse type of effect. The sun comes in all day. I want to keep the drapes closed during the day. The halide lights are real cookers too. It's going to be a battle. The a/c will have to stay on too probably. It's a bummer because there is no doorway to close the room to the rest of the house. We have a cloth hanging to try and keep some cool in. Not very cost effective. I don't have room for a chiller, the tank is crammed into a corner and the halide ballasts take up the extra room. I'm sure it's a matter of time before I have a heat related crash too. Keep at it buddy! Vote for U.

Hi Chad
Have you been in the forum? I think I saw a thread that was you about the corallimorphs. I've had a hard time keeping the tank cool lately. Got a fan running across the top. One day, we weren't home for most of the day and with the door shut there wasn't much breeze. Forgot to turn on the ac and the tank temp reached 85. I almost had a stroke! The only thing that seemed stressed was my cowrie. He was dead. I saw him in the morning and he seemed okay. In the afternoon his shell was barren. I don't think they shed their shells! Well pal, time for bed. Vote 4U.
