Nice tank!
I am contemplating setting up a small clown tank in the near future. It is nice to see others with similar set ups that I can use as motivation. Good luck with the new fish!

Hi
I did some reading about coral banded shrimp and they actually are cleaner shrimp. It probably approached the clownfish to clean it. The other was probably already dead and being scavenged. Anyways, since you got rid of him it's a moot point. I'll bet it was difficult to catch. I couldn't imagine trying to catch anything in my tank without dismantleing the whole thing. It's a tall and narrow setup so the rock extends pretty much from back to front. No room to be swinging a net through and too many cracks and crevaces to hide in. Good luck with the new clown. Take care, vote.

Good to hear from you
So sorry about your tomato clown. I didn't know coral banded shrimp were so aggressive! I was thinking of getting one but not now. Did you witness the murder or just see the shrimp chowing down? Maybe it was coincidental and the clown died of another reason. If you don't have any, get some turbo snails. They're good algae eaters and they're inexpensive. About three is good for a tank your size. I have four in my tank and they do a good job. How are your nitrates? Algae seems to thrive in higher nitrates. Let me know how it goes. Vote for you.

Hey
How are you? Anything new? I lost a few chromis to some unknown problem and something in the tank plowed through a whole rock of zoanthids. The whole colony was munched right down to the rock. I have no idea what it was either. We have to take Morgan, our macaw to the vet tommorrow morning. She has some kind of a respiratory problem and has been wheezing. If she gets excited she really has to struggle to catch her breath, poor thing. It's probably going to cost a fortune. I'm sure they'll do x-rays, blood tests, cultures as well as the physical exam. It'll probably cost more than a people doctor. I just hope she's okay. They don't make any kind of a bird carrier big enough for a macaw that I have seen anyway. We're going to take her in a cardboard box. The trip is alittle over an hour and she'll probably have the whole box shredded before we even get there. Wish us luck! See ya for now.

Hello
Nice tank I hear it is a real problem with such a small tank but yours is doing so well. I first started out with a 55 gal. and it was every week doing water changes. I am glad I got the bigger tank it is so much easier and I can go for up to 4 weeks before changing now that the sandbed is now up to full steam. Keep up the good work. and hears a vote for you

Nothing much new here either. I did trigger an avalanche in my tank that took me quite awhile to fix. Thankfully nothing was harmed. That'll teach me to fiddle around so much in there. At least I did't get bitten by a bristleworm or a crab! Vote for you.

Hi
Glad it wasn't a dead shrimp. I thought the same thing first time I saw a peppermint molt skin. I just left them in. The snails seemed to like them. They don't hurt anything. I have crab parts lying around too from molts. It's just calcium leftovers I think. Your shrimp must be happy as he's growing. Saw a crab yesterday that I haven't seen in months. It's amazing where they can hide for so long in such a small area. Well buddy, vote and talk later.

Hi
Didn't get home Friday night from work till 8:30 and I was too tired to blog. Tonight we just got in at 7:30, being away all day. We went to a radio controlled jet show in Gardner MA which is up in western MA about a 2 hr ride. We planned meet a doctor friend I work with there that loves jets. We had a nice time till a thunderstorm ripped through pretty much ending it all. Got back to the cars and our friend's car had a flat. Rode around looking for Fix a Flat, got it and fixed it. Then we followed him back to RI to a restaraunt that was really good. Different. It was Brazilian and Milanese. It was all you could eat. There was a huge antipasto bar with about 200 different things for starters. They gave you a thing that was red on one end and green on the other. When you turned it up to the green side thees "gaucho's as they call them" came with many different kinds of meat and other things on skewers and sliced some of whatever you wanted. Filet mignon too! When you wanted a break, you'd flip the thing over to the red side and they'd give you a break until you flipped it back over. Really good stuff! The best garlic bread I ever had in my life too. We were there for over 2 hours. I've never been in a restaraunt that long before. We were stuffed to capacity. Quite reasonable too. It was $28 a person. They have a website, check it out. Rodiziosteakhouseri.com Yum Yum. Vote for you.

Hey
That bristleworm I have is too big for a trap I think. I still may get one and try. I have a couple of small ones that live in empty shells but they don't seem to bother anything yet. That big one must have a big appetite and something is eating polyps. Guilty until proven innocent I say. The only other thing is that stupid damsel who goes out of his way to annoy me. I've seen him nip at polyps and clam mantles. Like I said, I think he does it just to annoy me. Vote buddy.

I'm glad you like the yellowtail. They are awfully cute. Get a couple, they like to hang out in groups. Three's a good number. I got beat up by our new pipsqueek of a clownfish while I was doing a water change. He kept charging at my arm and biting it. Then the blenny bonked me. No love in that tank at the moment. Glad your computer problem is fixed. Don't evr worry about responding. You get to it when ya do. My zoas and some other things have been getting eaten by something. My guess is the elusive bristleworm sea serpent or the stupid big damselfish. Grrrrr Well buddy, have fun with the new stuff. Vote for ya.

Hi
The yellowtail damsels would be a perfect choice. They are much less aggressive compared to other damsels. Plus they look so pretty in a reef. Nice and colorful. I wish my tank was bigger, I'd get more. How are the new zoas doing? If they're happy, they should spread fast. Soft corals also are a good choice. Your lights really aren't strong enough for hard corals. Happy reefing my friend, Vote. P.S. Your e-quarium needs alittle help, lol.

He's a blue finned damsel but you definately don't want one like him! He's a total jerk and besides attitude, he'll grow to about 6 inches and will get nastier. I just read an article that dosen't recommend them. I used to have some yellowtail damsels that were a beautiful purple/blue color with a bright yellow tail. Lots of personality. One of them I named Digger because he dug a home out with his tail under a fake coral I had at the time. I killed them out of ignorance. That was when I was fish only. The wre a nice smaller fish that would be good for a 20g. Or how about a firefish? They're pretty and peaceful. Happy choosing. Vote. Hey, I'm your 100th, a landmark!

Hi
Stormy weather just hit us like a mallet. We had a thunderstorm rip through that actually caused a powersurge through the house. It blew out 2 of the metal halide bulbs and the x-box 360. The x-box came back on when tried. I haven't tried the bulbs until they completely cool off or they can fracture. I hope it's not permanant because they cost about $80 a bulb. The winds looked like a hurricane. Hopefully it got Jack's radio controlled planes out of the trees they've been sitting in for weeks, lol. Vote for ya.

Hey
We went to a radio controlled airshow today on Cape Cod. Boy they had some big ones! Some had a 10 ft or more wingspan and needed trailers for transport. Some of those people could really fly well too, doing incredible tricks that I'm sure no real plane could do. It was really neat to watch. There was a jet and the guy who flew that said he had others that he didn't bring with him that go 240 mph! That's radio controlled! I can't imagine how they can even keep track of it at that speed. He told us about another R/C airshow that was specializing in the jets in August. We told him how cool we though the jet he had with him was and he said you haven't seen anything yet, to go to the other show. I guess we'll be going to that too. Nothing fishy today! Vote for ya.

Hello
I'll have to see what I can find in my books about the xenia. I figured you may have a bristleworm munching on the or something. But sounds like Reefreak had the same problem. We have some that are doing fine in the 24g tank but they've only been in there about a month and a half. I've gotten quite fond of them and would hate to see them croak up too. They seem to be growing and spreading at the moment. i saw some nice heather blue gray ones on a web site but refrained from ordering them until I find out more. But I'm sure they'll be gone by then, oh well better safe than sorry. I end up sorry enough, lol. Vote buddy.

Do you still have the pajama cardinal that is in you photo? I started out with a smaller tank and I think you could get away with a few more fish, maybe some green chromis? (not sure if I spelled that right!) You might be able to get away with another young tomato clown. I've had mine since the small tank, and as they get older one stays a female, and the other turns into a male. The male I have stayed very small, and the female got huge! They lay eggs all the time, but I never see fry. (dinner I guess) I'm no expert thats for sure. You ever talk to Nep2NsPlumR? If not, check him out, he is very knowledgeable with salt, and has a cool set up! I live in CT. It would be cool if we were close enough so I could give you some toad stool frags. It does very well with the kind of lights we both have. Well, I won't chew your ear off anymore, please visit again!

I saw your blog to Lizzy about the xenias, I have had the same problem. I had some and they did well for quite awhile, then they just died off. That's so sad about the xenia. That happened with mine too only I had it for less than a week. Something may be eating it. My feathery yellow polyps are disappearing at a rapid rate. I think either my jerk of a damsel or the huge bristleworm is eating them. Maybe the lighting isn't enough, who knows. If there's just a stump, my bet is a predator. Good luck with them, vote.

Hi
Cool on the shrimp. He sounds very neat. I found a hitch hicker starfish. It was really tiny, shaped like a brittlestar only albino. He was hanging onto a coral in a powerhead flow and eventually let go. He then balled up and travelled around the tank in a current for a bit before disappearing behind the rocks. I wonder if I'll ever see it again. The encounter was so brief. Take care, vote.

Hi
Cool on the tomato clown. It'll probably be all over once it feels at home. The arrow crab, I've heard need space as it gets 6 inches or more. They recommend them for larger tanks. They've also been known to nab slower fish and shrimp. I like that aspect of eating bristleworms! I haven't seen the big sea serpent again and am not sorry. He scared the bejezzus out of me that time he came out to grab the flounder. A piece of my powerhead has gone missing in the tank and I can't find it anywhere. I swear the nasty damsel hid it somewhere. He's always re-arranging things on me. Glad your computer is fixed. Vote for ya.

I think the bristleworm was probably the culprit that ate my xenia and palm tree corals. I've heard that they will munch on corals. They probably don't until they reach his size. Hi
I fed the tank some fresh flounder last night and the bristleworm came out and tried to grab a piece away from the plate coral. My god he's a monster and I only saw part of him. He's at least a quarter of an inch thick and god knows how long. I tried to grab it with the tongs but he retreated too quickly. I wanted to dump him in the 10g hospital tank. I'm afraid he's going to bite me some day. I'm always messing around in the tank and it's awkward using the aquagloves. I hope he's the only one! Have a happy, safe and fun 4th. Vote

I have a clownfish book that says anemones are not necessary, that substitutes can be mushrooms, ricordeas, soft corals and large tentacled stony corals. Soft corals and mushrooms are very hardy. A colt coral might be a good host. It's a softie with frond type protrusions. If you want the clown, get it and it will be fine. It will find a place it likes to hang. I've heard of them hosting power heads before. I wouldn't worry too much about a host. You've got lots of cave type places for it to hang out in. It may even take to the xenia who knows. I've heard adult female tomatoes are mean and may beat you up when you do tank maintenace. Good luck, hope you get a boy, lol. Vote.

I don't think my nem actually liked the halides. I had the tank screen shaded for awhile in the beginning to get everything used to the light strength. He began to move around the tank alot like he was unhappy. He kept shading himself. I actually got the lights mostly with him in mind too. That backfired. He's been staying put for the last 3 weeks in a semi-shaded area so hopefully he's happy now. He's never been a bubble tipper though. I don't think they like strong current either. Oh well, my yellow striped maroon clown adores him anyway. Vote for ya.

Hi
The tomato clown is compatible with the BTA but you might want to check out the stats before going ahead with it:Bulb Anemone
(Entacmaea quadricolor)
QUICK STATS
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Care Level: Moderate
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Reef Compatible: Yes
Lighting: Moderate to High
Waterflow: Medium
Water Conditions: 72-78° F, sg 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, dKH 8-12
Max. Size: 1'
Color Form: Green, Tan
Supplements: Iodine, Trace Elements
Origin: Fiji, Singapore, Tonga
Family: Actiniidae
Those are from Foster Smith liveaquaria. The BTA is suppose to be the hardier of anemones and so far mine is still alive. I've had him about 6 months with a yellowstriped maroon clown. It dosen't bubble though. He's always been pretty stringy even with halide lights and good feeding. A woman at a coral reef store told me they tend to get stringy in captivity. They should be in very well established tanks too. How long has yours been running? Talk to ya soon, vote.
