Hi Bill, good to hear from you mate! I’m relieved that it wasn’t something I said. Sorry to hear that you were in hospital. An eye infection from arthritis you say, that is rather strange. I hope you are feeling better and that the infection has been healed. These days we are increasingly causing pathogens to be more resistant to antibiotics especially. I once saw this program on tv where the physicians in Eastern Europe use bacteriophages to deal with drug resistant strains of infections. Very interesting stuff. May I suggest you try out medications containing African potato, which is rich in sterols and sterolins, which will alleviate some pain as it lubricates joints. Check with the pharmacist. This really works. I used to go thru those periods myself , where self-pity takes over, so I understand. Yes, its spring time for you guys. We not having much of an autumn yet, we still sizzling in the heat. Its still very hot and sticky, though it is easing up in the evenings and the mornings are fresh and cool. But in a couple of months, things will change somewhat. We also do a spring clean after winter, mostly because winter is also our dry season and during that time the dust is blown by the wind and it settles over everything. So just after the first rains of spring, we wash our curtains and blankets and corner to corner cleaning. Here there are maids that take care of that kind of stuff. It’s a norm here to have a maid, no matter you be rich or you be poor. Spiders are numerous here, the baboon spider is basically an African version of a tarantula. Then there are trapdoor spiders that are also pretty hairy and creepy, but they won’t hurt a human, they basically very shy. Then there are crab spiders and then there are button spiders. The crab spiders generally move sideways and many species have evolved to live in flowers, as you can imagine the agents of pollination being caught and devoured. Button spiders are highly venomous. There venom is extremely toxic. I see a lot of tarantulas sold at the pet stores these days. I don’t like them much, but different strokes for different folks ‘ey? Yeah, cookouts are great fun. There is another way we cook outside. It involves cooking on a fire in one of those cast iron pots. We call it potjiekos, which mean ‘pot food’ or food cooked in a pot. They usually cook bobotie, which is a Cape specialty, but any pot roast recipe or stew comes out great. There’s also biltong which is meat, either beef or venison that is seasoned and left out to dry. The result is absolutely great! We also dry sausage, known as wors, which is like whurst (German sausage), but its made from stuffing spiced minced meat into a thouroughly cleaned large intestine of an ox. Its wonderful! Now this sausage is dried and eaten too. You can try it out for yourself, just take some sausages out your freezer, thaw them and hang them out to dry. I promise you, you will be ever so surprised with the flavour. All this talk of food is making me hu

Hello Bill, Sincerely hope you are well. Well its been a while since I heard from you and I'm hopeful all is well. I also hope I didn't speak out of turn or said anything hurtful. This weekend was pretty good. I did the African cichlids setup on Friday night, detailied it. The tank is looking great again. Yesterday we had a huge barbeque called a braai in South Africa. Lots to eat and drink and the weather was fine and hot. I overdid the swimming and today my shoulder is slightly sore. Anyway here is a vote and hope to hear from you soon. Kind regards, Stokes

Me again!
Hi Bill, I’m sorry to hear about your accident. It is difficult to be handicapped, but you have much to live for and enjoy, like your family for example. And its certainly very positive that you still partake in your interest and hobbies. Yes, its pretty exciting here, mostly because its so dangerous too. As you may already know, South Africa had the highest rates for murder, armed robbery and rape. So besides looking out for animals, you have to look out for malicious humans too. Mechanics are not my favourite sort of people, but you are an exception along with all the honest ones. There are unscrupulous mechanics out here that dupe people into paying high prices, are generally dishonest and not to be trusted and they entertain the likes of car thieves who sell stolen parts to them. But I think the US has good standards and that sort of thing is not how Americans do such business. The problem with this country is it got out of a totally repressive system like apartheid and went to total freedom. From censorship of the media to total freedom. With that freedom came many liberties, the people who were previously disadvantaged felt like everyone owed them something. Now poverty and unemployment coupled with alcohol and drug abuse makes for a perfect climate for crime. Like cockroaches their count doubles and trebles. As the police arrest them there are more and more of them around, the jails are getting full and no politician or department is showing any interest. The death penalty has been abolished and we, the people weren’t consulted about that. We also have foreigners syndicating crime here because of our lax border patrols, foreigners like the Chinese, Russians, Nigerians, Pakistanis, Zimbabweans and Mozambicans, among others. We wish we were rid of this scum, as they go about their daily business supplying drugs to our kids, smuggling ivory and rhino horn, abalone and lobster poaching, game poaching, cattle rustling, murder, robbery and racketeering. I’m glad your son is on the right track. I used to work at a youth center some time back and I tell you its sad hearing from the parents of youngsters who are addicts. I’m glad that he chose his path well. Drugs are the wreckers of lives and families and so is alcohol. I like red tails too. I would like to have more snakes, but the problem is space. Though a red tail won’t grow too long, another cage would be a bit too much. However, I have plans for a Vietnam Blue beauty, well that is if I ever come across one. I would also like to have at least a milksnake and a california king too. Fish are my first passion though, and I would like to get a 6” tank for my discus, perhaps move the Africans to their current setup and get some community fish in the African setup. I have the same taste as you say champagne on a beer budget. Nice expression, by the way. It was good hearing from you. I wish you a lovely day and all the best! Kind regards, Stokes

Hi there...
Hi Uncle Willis. I was just thinking about you the other day, but things have been so hectic, I didn’t get a chance. Then the administrators of this forum deleted my snake blog and all the comments and conversations with it. Ollie looks great! He looks like he's got a healthy appetite! Lets see, a bit about meself, I’m 31 years old, of mixed ancestry, African, caucasian, indian and arab heritage, male, married, I have a 16 month old daughter. My interests are fish and aquariums, snakes, technology, music, history, selected arts and cultural interests. I read a lot, especially non-fiction. My favourite sports are cricket, soccer and rugby. I live in a place called Krugersdorp, about 35km west from Johannesburg and 60km south of Pretoria. The altitude is pretty high , about 1500m off sea level. During the summer months its wet and hot. In winter it gets cold at night, but the days are mildly warm, and its dry too. Winter is a short season but it feels forever. Sunny conditions prevail for most of the year except Spring, when it rains for days on end sometimes. There’s a lot of bush everywhere, the grass grows very long, some as long as 2m. There are a few trees here and there, but mostly its grassland. As such there are a lot of snakes, bugs and other critters in the bush. The big game are fenced in reserves and national parks, but you come across rogue leopards who attack the farmers’ flocks, caracal, jackal and servals, with few antelope like dik-diks and klipspringer, perhaps impala in some regions and then there are vervet monkeys and baboons. Lions, leopards, rhino, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, kudu and wildebeest are protected by law in reserves and national parks, such as Kruger National Park. This park is now part of the Trans-frontier national park joining up with the adjacent parks in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. My favourite holiday place in S.A. is the east coast. Its sub tropical and humid, warm during all seasons but very hot and sticky in summer. The beaches are beautiful and the waves are just swell. Then Mpumalanga province in the vicinity of Nelspruit, that’s my second choice. The waterfalls, mountains and vegetation are simply heaven. Otherwise there are many regions in this country to visit. Its much more stable politically than most other African states. The only hassle is crime, of which armed robbery and murder are very high. Everyone is at risk, foreigner or national. What’s more is that the governments lax attitude at controlling the influx of refugees from all over Africa. These guys form gangs and run illicit trades like dealing drugs, racketeering, breaking and entering and car-jacking. Many people here own guns, but not me, I will take my chances, but having a gun is another reason to come and take it from you. Otherwise it’s a very cool place to visit. You will have the comforts and facilities of an excellent standard and quality, an adventure like you can only imagine and lots and lots of sunshine! Take care. Kind regards
