Zack Thanks for having the confidence to ask me for advice and for your compliments. I can't give advice, can only tell you what works for me. I do have questions first, though. How often do you change the water? What amount of a change do you do? What kind of skimmer do you have? Does it have what I call the blue and white long confetti-like paper? Mine did and I took it out, it was holding too much junk. I now put in a small carbon bag monthly and a piece of filter pad (buy it in a big bag and cut it to 2"x6" and fold it. You will have to weight it down so it doesn't float up to the intake and cause it to flood over. I change that filter pad weekly. I clean the skimmer monthly. How often do you clean the cup? I do it weekly, at least. I do a 25-40% water change every 2 weeks. I don't agree with tossing the bio-balls. It sounds like your skimmer was dirty that is why the water quality improved when you removed it. You have to have a good filter/skimmer. Do you have enough live rock? It is a natural bio-filter. Do you have any "dead spots" where there is no flow so nitrates are building up? Is it my imagination or do I not see sand, only gravel? I am not sure but I think a salt tank needs sand as it holds the good bacteria and is more natural. I recognize that you are on a tight budget but these are my thoughts. Good luck and enjoy! ~KerryCome visit me, Kerry's African Cichlid Tank, Kerry's Angel/Discus Community - Revised!!, Kerry's Betta Homes, Kerry's DISCUS Tank, Kerry's #1 Reef Tank & Kerry's Juvenile (for now) Discus.
