Oscar I started out with one in a 55 and had to go larger. They "say" one to a 55 and two to a 125 but they are messy fish and require LOTS of upkeep. I don't recommend them if you aren't going to put in the time! The bigger the better with these guys. Might as well just start in a large aquarium than to try to upgrade later.Come visit me, BigBen.

my tank i have had my tank for only about a month and a half. it is up and running wonderful, i included the canister filter for added filtration. it was not a kit, i put pretty much all of it together my self. the only part i guess you can say was a kit was the tank and canopy. the canopy came with lighting and over the top filtration. it is a salt water tank and it is running great. next step is getting a chiller... thanx for stopping by...Come visit me, RileyCFR.

Canister filters are a good choice for messy fish like big cichlids; undergravel filters would probably be a disaster. HOB (hang-on-back) filters would probably also work for a 55 gallon, since that is a little on the small side. If you choose an HOB though I'd go for excessive filtration, like an Aquaclear 110 which is good for up to 110 gallons. Ultimately it depends on the fish you get (namely how big they get, and especially how aggressive they are since 55 gallons is a little on the small side).Brian, Palatine, IL.
