Planted
Well, the switch was completed this past weekend without any issues. No changes or affects on the biological cycle with no spikes in ammonia and just a tiny spike in nitrites. Nitrates are now at 20 PPM instead of the prior 40 PPM and I'm guessing they'll drop a little more as soon as the plants get a little more established. I'll be adding the list of plants shortly to my description. I'm planning on introducing 3 more Platy's to the tank this weekend for some more color and probably 6 Neon Tetras a week or two after that if all remains stable.

Beginning the Switch
I've begun preparing my tank for the final stage. I've removed the prior HOB filter (the Emperor 280) I had on there now that the Eheim canister seems to be maintaining quality pretty well. I'll monitor the water the next day or two for any changes in quality but it should be fine. I'll probably swtich the substrate this weekend; however, I will be leaving about 1/4 of the current gravel to maintain some of the bacteria colonies in there and will provide one dose of Cycle to ensure conitnuity of the nitrogen process to limit any mini cycles. Once that's done, I'll probably get some more plants from the store. Though I will most likely just snip and trnasplant the Anacharis from my Cichlid tank and it is growing fast and has already doubled in lenght.

Switch coming soon
Well... I'll start the switch to live plants soon, probably this week or next. First will swap out the substrate to Flourite and start adding plants shortly after that. Otherwise, seems the fish are happy with the new equipment and no problems with any of it.

New Equipment, pt. 2
Well, over the weekend I installed some of the new equipment. I got the Eheim 2213 Canister in with no issues except for some initial slight leaking. THat was easily corrected when I notice I forgot to clamp down one of the hose connections. Otherwise, everything is running smoothly with it now. I'm keeping the emperor in for now to assist with bio-filtration until the canister has established a decent bacteria colony. I've used some 'Cycle' to assist the proces.

I've got the Hydor ETH in-line heater installed and running well. It's keeping my temp nearly perfect with very little fluctuations, only fluctuation is an increase in temp when the room temps get a little high. I'm not too worried about it anymore now that the air is running and keeping the house comfortable as well. I also put up the new lights as well. Next in line for upgrading is the substrate, which I'll use flourite to replace about 75% of the gravel in now so I can finally make the switch to live plants. I'll keep about 25% of the current gravel to mix in with the flourite to keep some of the bacteria colonies to limit the severity of any mini-cycle.

New Equipment
Well, my new equipment came in! See the profile for the setup now! Can't wait to install the Canister filter, heater, etc. I'll probably swap the substrate to Flourite this weekend as well as I have an extra long weekend as well. Lot's of stuff to do! I'll stop by the LFS and pick up a filter bag so I can stick some of the old gravel in there and place it in the thank so as to help the new substrate develop the beneficial bacteria and hopefully limit the tank to only a very minor cycle. I'll keep the Emperor running for a week or so as the new canister settles in as well. Next week... more fish and finally plants! (If all is stable that is!) Once all is said and done I'll get a picture or two up to add to the blog.

Plans for the Future
Might as well post on my tank and what's happening. I'm currently in the process of making changes prior to restocking after my mysterious die-off about 2 weeks ago. Appears it was some kind of infection or disease as water parameters were always good. Thanks to everyone in the forums that responded and helped in my post there. Anyway, currently am upgrading the lighting in this tank to a Coralife 65W 6500K Deluxe Freshwater light. Once that's arrived, I'll be swapping the gravel substrate for some Flourite and picking up a bunch of plants to make this a planted aquarium like my 20G tank, that is currently cycling and will eventually be stocked with African Cichlids. I also have a Eheim 2213 Canister Filter on the way that will replace the Emperor. Just have to be sure to monitor water quality with all these changes. I'll keep you all updated as that proceeds along. Oh, and I don't have bleeding heart tetras as stated in the article; but 3 Red Serpea Tetras, which weren't an option.
