Life gets in the Way! LOL
Sorry it's been so long to get back to everyone. I apologize for the notes I've left unanswered. Thanks for your patience. All's well here except we need rain so desperately. I'm so afraid of Wildfires come next month or possibly earlier. Daffodils are blooming now but, for how long is anyone's guess.Been having lots of computer problems. I know I have a Virus from my Yahoo being hacked. Computer is in getting fixed as I write this...YEA! I'll try to stay in touch more often and not lose 50,000 point expiring! A shame, Bye now! Take care all!

How are you? things were crazy all week but have since slowed back down, whew. Fish and furs are all doing great, and my gecko was more than happy to get a bunch of creepy crickets...I hate how they look! EWW! Waiting for some weather other than 'nice' and plotting out some landscaping I hope to do this summer. Not much else to share, hope you are enjoying a nice weekend!

The pic of the red flowers with the kitty is fantastic. Nice you got a new camera! We're still busy, and still trying to get over the various ills we all had. I would be fine except I have a tendency to overdo things and so the family has been nagging me to do nothing more. Yes, I see we are to get some actual wintery weather in a day or so, I sure am hoping it's a major storm, we really need it. This cold and dry is just not nice. I'm sure hoping my new perennials survive this!

I used the neons because they were the most natural food source for a south american biotope. Besides fish like guppies are easy to breed, no challenge, whats the fun in that. I try to learn something new with every tank.

Hello again
Sorry it took so long to get back to you but with the holidays and my wife having a baby two weeks ago it's been pretty busy. To answer your question the neon tetras in the tank were originally the food source. I feel I should explain that the tank was an experiment at first I was trying to make a complete eco system with the neons being the lowest in the food chain and the angels and rams being the highest. The neons were put in with the sole purpose of breading and the fry would feed the larger fish. This worked really well for a few months, but fish grow and the fry soon were not enough to keep them fed. So I have to feed the fish now but they still leave the adult neons alone ( they do still love them some neon fry though. Other then feeding I clen the gravel when it gets dirty and clean algea when it gets to bad. The automatic water changes make my life a whol lot esier. All the neons and both pairs of angels and two of the rams are now breeding on a regular basis I think this is because The water quality is very good and the water is soft with a ph of 7 constantly. The gravel sits on a 1 inch bed of peat moss which gives me the soft neutral water. Thanks for the intrest in my tank and i'm leaving you a vote.

Happy New Year!
How've you been? Things are quite nice here, enjoyed our holidaze craze and am now really enjoying a quiet new year. Weather is still dry but at least there are some clouds to help remind me it's actually winter. Been in the high 50's with lows in the 20's at night. I'm really tired of this weather! Where's my storms!?! I sure enjoy looking at the photos of your lovely property, wow. We didn't make it out of the valley this summer, but perhaps next summer I'll get my San Fran trip in and we could stop to say hello in person. Well, guess that's it for now, I'm trying to avoid going to the grocery store but alas, it must be done. Hope you are having a nice day!

Seasons Greetings!
It is rather rural, one can find people on horseback,or travelling in horse carts, lots of livestock grazing on the neighbouring hills. Fortunately I live in an area where the big game are restricted to reserves. There are some totally wild places here, but animals such as baboons and monkeys can be a bother as they come through towns rummaging trash cans and looting any households that have windows open etc, leopards roam some areas, they can be nasty if cornered. Closer to the city things are pretty much like most cities, we have some great national parks and wildlife. Im an outdoorsy kind of person with an affinity for animal welfare. I also like history and culture. You will be surprised to know that I'm familiar with a lot of American expressions but I do not know the Sticks. We call it veld which is an Afrikaans word meaning field. Most of what we see in cinema and tv is American and thank heavens for that cos British sucks if you've ever watched any. Much of the programs were dubbed in Zulu or Afrikaans which is what a lot of people out here speak. I could tell a southener compared to a Canadian to a New Yorker based on tv representation of various different types of American. We speak a rather British sort of English here, heavily influenced by the Afrikaans language. There are of course localpidgins and slangst that make it easy to communicate in a country where we have 11 languages. It is about quarter before 12, so I best be off before I kiss the celebrations. Take care and it certainly has been nice to hear from u. Happy New Year! Cheers! Stokes

Saturday Hello!
Hi Chris! Did some blog-dropping and see that Santa brought you a camera! Wahoo! Hope to see pic's of the kitten soon. So sorry to hear about your cories. Curious what temp you keep your tank at? If it's above 76 degrees it may be too warm for the cory cats? I just got a panda cory and did some research on it and they don't like a temp above 77. There's also the thought that they're getting sick from your supplier? Angels can be territorial. Have you seen them nipping at the cories at all?? And last but not least, do you feed the cories shrimp pellets/sinking wafers? If you decide to try them again I suggest getting them from a different source. Emerald greens are supposedly the hardiest.
Keep me updated and hope to see kitty pics soon! Lav4u! Smiles, Rochelle

I'm glad to hear from another discus lover! Thank you for your kind compliments, you have q mighty fine setup yourself. Forgive me I am not familiar with the Sticks. I reside out in Krugersdorp in a small town, but work in Northern Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa. The water is pretty good though borehole water and well water is quite hard, so I use tap water and condition it with peat. I use a trickle filter and an internal UV steriliser which works great to.eradicate diseases and parasites. How was Xmas? I had a fun weekend out in the Magaliesberg, fishing on the Crocodile River. There are few Crocs if any in case you're wondering. I almost shat myself on Saturday night when I took a stroll to the long drop and saw pairs of eyes staring at me and then charged off in the opposite direction. It was a fe kudu and zebra lucky enough. We have some great discus during the festive period, most of my fish originate I'm Hoedspruit,SA or Israel, funny enough.Israeli discus are superb, pretty expensive too, around $40 Or R300 For a juvenile those like my larger ones are around R2000. So I buy them small. Otherwise do take care and have a lovely NEW years day! Cheers! STOKES

Did you find anything new at the fs in San Francisco?
Went to a lfs I've never visited before in search of filter media for the 110. Ended up bringing home 3 balloon mollies. Go figure!

Wednesday Hi!
Sorry I sent the loach info to you. Meant to send it to someone else. Sometimes I worry about myself!
Hope your Co2 regulator isn't crapping out on you. Def don't want to have that kind of expense surprise you this time of year.
I bought an AquaClear 110 filter for my 55 gallon off craigslist. Put the AquaClear 70 that had been on the 55 on my 29 gallon. The 110 is a bit noiser but I've already gotten use to it.
Hope you're having a great week. Lav4u!

Your new loach...I want one... :o)
Common name: Ocellated loach, Banded mountain loach.
Maximum size: 2 inches (5 cm)
Care: The tank for these fish should mimic their natural environment which are the gravel/sand bottom hill streams of Sri Lanka. Plenty of stones and shelters for hiding is recommended. Ideally, these loaches should be provided with brook/hillstream aquarium conditions incorporating a high flow rate and well oxygenated water - please see Hillstream Loaches: Specialists at Life in the Fast Lane for a more detailed explanation.
Feeding: Most foods accepted. Commercial sinking formulations and bottom-dwelling live-foods. Frozen foods such as bloodworm/brine shrimp.

Monday Evening Hello!
Hi! The timers will def get messed up during a power outage. Do they ever go long enough that the temp of your tank if affected? I'm a bit concerned about that. Lost our power for 2 weeks years ago in an ice storm. Didn't have tanks at that time, thank goodness! I bought timers that have multiple off and on times. Have mine set to go on at 6am (when I get up), off from 11am until 4:00pm and then on from 4-10pm. Off from 10pm until 6am. I've bought all my tanks used and have luckily never had to replace any bulbs.

Hello Chris,
Hope you are getting your algea under control. I have that black bushy type on the edge of some leaves in the 45 gal I keep an eye on but so far hasn't gotten out of hand - crossing my fingers! Also have some green algea on the driftwood but the kind that looks pretty - not all over - and the bush nose Pleco keeps it down. The black bushy type (can't remember name) is difficult to get rid of but I have heard flourish excel can clear it.....

hope you are enjoying your company :). V4u!

Hi Chris,
Blog peeked and saw the posts on your Cory and Oto's. A couple years back I couldnt keep a Cory alive. My tanks were mature enough ( Oto's especially it is suggested to wait until a tank is over 6 months ) and testing results were good with no ammonia or nitrite. My Nitrate wasn't high either. I chocked it down to a bad batch at LFS and later when I tried again - success! So I agree with Tamara, test the water and then if OK maybe try from different LFS? Also, how do you acclimate? Maybe the water at LFS is different enough from yours that acclimation should take longer. Mine is always so different it takes me all night or longer.

Hope you enjoy the pending holidays and your company :). Oh, and the quite time as well!

Thursday Hello & V4u
Sorry I'm just now getting back to you. I've been busy...ugh! Does your tank sit by a window? Does it perhaps get sunlight hitting it? I know that can cause algae growth along with leaving the light on too much. I have both mine on timers so that they're off all night plus they go off two different times during the day. Not sure why your cory cats & algae eaters die though. I'm thinking you need to test your water...or take some to a lfs & ask them to test it. Too bad you don't like the snails...mine keep mine algae free. The driftwood I bought was covered in it & between the snail and the pleco they cleaned it up in no time. Keep me updated on your tank!

Adding salt to a freshwater aquarium has some perks, but isn't beneficial to all inhabitants. It does help keep Ich under control, stimulates the slime coating, etc. But cory's don't like it. Algae wafers don't grow algae any more or less than any food will, lots of light and having excess food convert into waste is the best algae fertilizer. Not sure why your otos and corys disappear. Have you had your water tested? do you do your own testing? I do mine about once a month unless something seems amiss. I know high ammonia is hard on the corys, also will help keep algae growing nicely, so perhaps more water changes? Not sure what else to offer there, besides my empathy!

What kind of water do you have? Do you add salt? Cory's don't tolerate salt at all, as tough as they can be to temp changes and other issues, that's one that is a sure kill. Learned that the hard way a long time ago. And making sure they get enough to eat is tricky. do you feed at night and turn out the lights shortly after to ensure they get some nocturnal snack? Not sure what else to suggest, those fish mysteries are always, well, mysterious. I give shrimp pellets and algae wafers a few evenings a week for all my bottom dwellers. How goes life otherwise? I'm happy the turkey rush is over. Had a nice time in my art room last night, made 6 glass pieces to fire this weekend (I only fire on weekend nights, rates are cheaper for the stupid electric co.). I'll be working on ceramic things soon, after I get done with some painting projects. Always have many things going all the time. It works nicely though as there always something drying so have time for other things to get started. Nice my bf says to stay out of the kitchen and create and stop worrying about little house chores. he's a keeper for sure! Well, need to get the vacuum out, the dust coyotes are attacking the dust bunnies and I dont' want my slippers to be next haha.

to mention most of you dinner sounded very delicious except I do not do okra in any way shape or form, can't even stand to smell it cooking! Funny enough I was raised on southern foods and my granny always made sure to keep her homegrown okra out of my plate! She was good like that. I don't do nuts in my cakes or brownies either, though I do always have a large variety of nuts on hand for munching on. Yup, have some interesting food issues...I don't let foods on my plate touch, have to use separate ones for anything that might have overflowing juice trying to attack another food item (gravy touching salad could kill me, I'm sure!)...hehe, some OCD issues are just absurd and yet I cannot stop them from happening! My sister does the wash the hands a million times a day thing, and I wash a lot of dishes a million times a day hehe. I'm looking forward to the upcoming week, it's slated to be peaceful and I need the down time for sure. Or maybe the selfish ME time, not sure there's a difference hehe. Tanks are all doing well, the dragon goby LOVES the sandy bottom and is really enjoying the chopped krill as well. The Fig8 is too, and I suspect I'll have to find that bigger tank before another year goes by so I can move goby into the 55, he's really growing!

Happy Thanksgiving! I am thankful for all of my friends both on here and at home. One can not have too many!

It was great to hear from you again! How have things been?

The big horse in my photos is Eddie. He's almost mine. That is, I drive him and his buddy once a week and his current elderly owner says he's mine and that he's willed to me. I was riding but after so many concussions I've been banned from that. :( Paddington sounds like he was a great guy. Kind of like Eddie and about the same size from your description.

Hi Chris,
It's been awhile and found myself swimming by ; I blog peeked and became interested in your camera story that caused giggles LOL. Wow! I absolutely agree, let others take those wedding pics!!! Here is a hope that you recieve a camera for Christmas with the wedding setting disabled! Still looking forward to pics of both Chloe and the new kitty:)

Life events have been up and down. My mother has needed lots of support since my step dad died in Sept. and most of our weekends have been visiting with her. She came down with walking pneumonia last week and is finally getting better!

Today is tank maintenance day - wish I had that universal adapter for my python! One of these days I will remember to order it;). get tired of these buckets but I do have my tricks. I can drag them on a rug on our hard wood floors LOL

My main Angelfish pair, Fin and Fancy spawned on the intake again and the smaller young female that they spawned a long time ago has grown up and is fat with eggs and has been bothering them so I put in a tank separator I purchased a while back that fits a 45 gal. I am going to skip this week with water change on the 45 Angel tank. I usually have to turn off the Rena canister and unattach the intake so the water level dropping doesn't expose the eggs but of course that disturbs them greatly. I did an extra wc earlier in the week anyway while acclimating 3 new swordtails I added to the tank a few days ago. The trio of swordtails are doing great :)

Hope all is well in your world and weather is as it should be. Dry where you are?
