Wish me luck!
Well, here I go! I'm headed for New York City this Thursday morning (July 24) for a few days stay at HSS (Hospital For Special Surgery) as I'm about to get a Total Knee replacement on my right knee. Wish me Luck!

This is supposed to be one of the best hospitals in the country for this type of surgery. The hospital is known for joint repair & replacement (mostly joints of the extremities). Many of the doctors are team physicians for Professional & Olympic teams including the NY Giants & NY Nets to name a few. Their logo is "Where the World comes to get back in the game!"

I'm supposed to be in the hospital for a few days then I'll be out of work for 4-8 weeks. (So I should be able to spend a little more time on the site during my time at home.) I'm told that it will take about a year for total recovery but, I should start to feel better by the time I'm ready to go back to work.

As for the aquarium...things are doing OK. I have one fish that has been a bully toward another one (same species) and it's managed to nibble away at the tail and dorsal fins of the poor fish it's been beating on; and now, the (one being picked on) hides all the time. I've also lost a few others of different varieties. It seems I've hit the max number of fish; every time I put a new one into the tank either it or another fish in the tank dies. AHHH, the balance of nature!

I need to replace my light fixture, too! About a week days ago the tank light failed to operate properly, after I took it apart I found that there was no way to repair it so, I need to buy a replacement hood. My search of the lfs produced nothing I was looking for, so I turned to the internet & one of my favs (Pet Mountain) and hit a home run with a single bulb unit for $57.99. Luck was with me because they're having a 50% sale and this is one of the items on sale! I'll need to order a few other things to make the total large enough ($75) for free shipping. That shouldn't be too hard, lol!

Well, I hope you have a great summer; and I'll post an update when I get home from the hospital.

Happy New Year!
Cherry barbs apparently do better with some salt in their water, so I think you'd have no trouble keeping nerites happy with them. Sorry it took so long, good grief, time rather flew by the past few months. Perhaps this year will go a bit slower. I can dream anyway hehe. I'm looking forward to this year, I get my aunts 125 gal tank finally, most likely this spring or summer so that's something to look forward to indeed. Hope you are having a nice week!

Undergravel filter
I've used one for years as a secondary means of filtration. I also use it as a means of water circulation throughout the tank. I have a pair of powerheads and rather than hang them on the side of the tank to circulate the water, I support them on the tubingfor the undergravel...that way I get a double benefit from having them in the tank. The system tends to pull the waste and extra food into the gravel and holds it there until I clean it when doing a water change.

How are you making out with your tank(s)? Haven't seen too many questions from you lately, so I guess that you've managed to figure things out and are up & running successfully!

GOOD NEWS!
Well my friend, it's been a long time coming and I have to say I finally did it! The tank and stand have made the transition from the basement to the bedroom and has taken it's place where the 40 used to be. It took a friend & I most of the day to make the move. I had to get the old stand & tank out of the way, then clean the walls & floor behind where the tank was sitting for the better part of 28 yrs, then paint the wall & trim before the new one was put in place. The fish have survived the move & are doing well in the "new digs". I haven't had the opportunity to take any pictures of the completed project but, I will soon and they too will get posted here. Now I have to go fishin' for some new tank mates!

How are you doing? We're getting almost 60 degree weather here! I can't believe it! First we started out winter with the coldest weather we've had for years and now it's like spring. I hope it stays this way. I don't like the cold at all. Is it warming up there too?

How is your tank doing now? Have you figured out what was wrong with the balance? And how are you liking your new guitar? I bet it's fun to play around with. Yep, you'll have to let me know when you hit it big!

Here's a vote for you. Enjoy the weekend. It's almost here!

Happy New Years!
Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. Holiday busy I guess and have felt too tired and lazy. Keeping this short as it is late (for me ;). Sorry to here you lost your danios. I wont be getting another Betta and will be putting 7 dwarf rasbora that stay very tiny so wont over load the 5 gal. We went to my mothers for a New Years dinner along with friends of hers and it was fun. Good for my mother as well to get through the holidays. Oh, and we all watched Kungfu Panda :). Cute LOL

Happy Holidays!
A belated Merry CHristmas to you and your family. Hope all is well and everyone is happy and healthy. As you can probably guess, it has been extremely hectic around here. I took the week before Christmas off from work so that I'd have time to make some long needed repairs to the kitchen cabinets, decorate the house (inside and out) and prepare for a dinner for 7 other members of my side of the family (not including my wife & I) on Christmas Eve. Surf & Turf was on the menu (a roast of beef tenderloin (that came out fantastic) and baked shuffed shrimp (with homemade seafood - crab meat, lobster tail meat, and bay scallops - stuffing), mashed cheddar cheese potatoes, a green bean, carrot, onion and bacon medley & bread. Appetizers consisted of a platter of various cheeses, soupy & crackers and homemade crab cake (balls) (they were quite the hit!)
The wife and I also made Christmas cookies (about 8 dozen) & fudge for desert! Everyone had a good time!
Wishing you a happy, healthy, wealthy new year!

Snails
Nerites are excellent algae eaters. The only down side I have noticed with them is in tanks with 2 or more the laid eggs. (will not hatch in freshwater) The eggs look like sesame seeds and are hard to remove. I like the rabbit snails the are live-bearers so no over populating. I can't vouch for there appetite though. I do not have them in any tank with out other algae eaters. I have heard the Japanese trapdoor snails are the best of both worlds, good algae eaters and live-bearers so no eggs.

Snails
I like to use freshwater Nerite snails, because they can not breed in fresh water. These snails are also available for saltwater but can be acclimated to fresh, I have never done this. I try to keep about 3 or 4 snails per gallon. I buy mine through the mail. My water is very soft so I see some pitting on the shells over time (2+ years). They are great for algae, I can not remember the last time I had to scrape it off the glass.

How are you and your critters doing? And how is the weather? It finally rained here. Yippee! We are so happy after months and months of dry beautiful sunny weather. One really can get tired of nice days plus we had some forest fires around and the rain got rid of them and the residual smoke.

It's cooler too but still hasn't frosted. Perfect weather, not too hot and not too cold. It's supposed to freeze this week and is overdue but I hope it doesn't. I like eating fresh vegetables from the garden and the frost will kill them.

Could I ask a great favour of you? I entered a photo of Eddie, big percheron horse, in Dover Saddlery's online photo contest. I would love to have your vote and you only need to vote once. The contest ends soon so the sooner you can vote the better. And if you would pass it along to your friends I'd appreciate that so much.

Bummer with loss of Oto's...
Yes, I would not get oto cats again from the first place. Darn, I wish LFS stores were required to do things right and not leave dead fish in tanks. Good luck on the two you have and I hope you can increase that number soon - as a labor of love ;). I am off to work outside asmit is actually a sunny day.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for stopping by my nano setup :) Are you enjoying your summer festivities at the lake? have a fun Holiday? I read Tamara's blog and it looks like you have oto cats now? Tell me about them...

I spent part of the day picking out pieces of bark and rock from a large bag of Miracle Grow Organic potting soil - preparing it for the 45 gal Angelfish tank. I'm not planning a dry start on it but want to do that one naturally planted in the Diane Walstad method. So tomorrow I will be soaking it and netting out any floaters that I missed. Than wring it all out in an old T-Shirt LOL. I want the soil to be fine and hopefully soak out any excess nitrogen. Starting the Nano gave me confidence to go for it in a larger tank. Once setup I can test the water before adding my Angels , Ram and Cories.

Kathy

Hey! And haha, I upgraded! I have a 40 gal long, and my fish are loving it! I'm thinking about getting a reedfish, but I don't know how well it would go with my dragon goby. Also, my dragon goby is now about 8 inches long. I got him from wal-mart(had to save him) and he was about 3 inches. That was two days after Christmas. He's a big boy now! Have a great day!

Hello!
hopefully the Oto's are settling in, sounds like you had quite a hassle with them! Some days are like that in the fish world. I can months with not a glitch and then seems like everything hits at once or just have something totally weird out of the blue happen. My fish are about to get tanks cleaned and I have a few in each of my tanks that like to 'help'. The shrimp in the brackish are creepy when they help, they like to clean under my fingernails, EWWW cReEpY! One of my clown loaches is quite entertaining and the glofish all think it's feeding time and try to beg what they can. Have to clean all glass too, so it will be a chore getting all 3 back on track. One of these days (I keep threatening it) I'll have to get my 55 profiled. Maybe this week it will happen, now that I've got batteries charged, and found my camera again. Cleaned my desk the other day and forgot where I put it...typical... :}

Snail Question Response!
You asked me a snail question in April. Sorry I have not had time to get on. But anyway, I LOVE my snail Sushi! He is very fun to watch and have as an addition to any tank. Snails are an amazing creature, and are very unique. They can clean the sides of your tank, and the bottom. But I feed mine shrimp pellets. If you are not sure about getting a snail, definatly get one! They are about $2 at petsmart. I would recommend getting 2-3 at the same time so they grow together. I started with one because I wasn't sure about having a snail. But now Sushi is HUGE! He is about an inch and a half now and I got him when he was about a centimeter. he is still growing too! I wish I would have started out with 3 so they would be the same size now. Anyway, I have recommended to all the beginning aquarists I know that a couple snails are a great addition to their tropical community. Well, if you have anymore snail questions I would be happy to help! Btw, Sushi is a Gold mystery snail.

Hi Bob,
How goes your tanks and fish? Had a chance to get any oto cats? Btw, avoid anything labels as "Chinese algae eaters" They stop eating algea as adults and get very nasty to other fish - eating what they can fit in their mouth. Suppose they would make someone a good single "wet pet" in a tank by themselves as adults...

Keeping this short as it is late for me.

Take care,

Kathy

Oto Cats continued :)
Due to their small size you could actually do up to 5 in the ten and they would be happier for it. They will do a better job on the plants themselves keeping algae off and will do the glass as well but not as good as the Pleco. So otos are better with the plants and Plecos are better with the glass. It also depends on what kind of algae is on the glass. If it is green and not hard the otos will definately do well here too.

At worse, your plants will be cleaner and you may have to scrape some prior to water change.

btw, oto's do not do well in newer tanks. They need a mature aquarium that is at least 6 months old. And they need their diet supplimented with algae tablets, squash, cucumber, etc.. once or twice a week depending on the available algae that is eatable .

Hope this helps.

thanks! lots of others on here have more knowledge, but in my experience, the ottos would do a better job. plecos become quite lazy as they get bigger and produce much more waste. if you can get ottos that are in good shape i think you will be much happier with the work they do. even some of the other chinese algae eaters too. good luck. let me know what you do. take care. leaving some votes, Kay

Oto catfish and...
Hi Bob :). If it was me I would rehome the Pleco (as you had mentioned you might do?) and replace with no less than 3 - preferably 5 oto cats. They like to school together and 1 or 2 would be lonely. The Pleco adds a much larger bioload to the tank then even 5 oto as they are so small. in addition they do not damage plants.

Do you know what kind of Pleco you have? if Bristlenose they can get 4- 5 inches but if unknown you may have one that would normally get a foot or larger.

I wish I had test kits for phosphates - all the kits can add up cost wise!

Good luck and let me know how it turns out :)

Hi Bob,
That is funny! So we were both baking bread out of our bread machines? LOL. Sounds like you have lots of festival choices in your area through out the summer. What fun!

Well, regarding algae fixes here is my 2-cents. First, do a search on this site on "algae" and two links will pop up. Choose the top one by Neale Monks. It is a good article. I never add any chemicals to my tanks including medication (unless I can definitely identify the problem like with Ich). Any problems I look at what is the cause instead of quick fix. So all that I add to my water is organic carbon (Flourish Excel) and Flourish - plant supplements. Algae is caused by only 3 things: water, light and nutrient. With water changes that takes care of the first unless you have phosphates/nitrates or something coming from your tap. Too much or not enough light? Too much uneaten food? Too many fish? Not enough fast growing plants to out compete the algae?

I like some algae but not in excess of course. For fish that help I prefer oto cats and shrimp as they don't add much to the bioload of the tank.

Hope this helps. I am trying to find the cause of black algae spots showing up on my Anubias leaves. Not a biggie yet but....:)

Hi Bob,
It has been awhile. So how is everything? How is the growth of your swords doing? Today I am baking cookies and bread for a bake sale tomorrow for our annual "Moose Pass Solstice" festival. It's the typical small town festival with stuff for kids, live local bands, sale booths, beer garden and of course the yearly rendition of the Moose t-shirts and mugs ;). I do enjoy it, seeing neighbors and just the great atmosphere.

This weekend tank maintenance and moving my Angelfish fry to 20 grow out is planned too. They are so ready to get out of the floating container I have them in. Growing on micro worms, brine shrimp hatch and now decapped brine shrimp eggs (less messy)
