Hi, once again, Rick! Wish me luck!
Hi Rick!
It's been a long time, I hope all is well with you & yours, and you're not working too hard these days.

Well, here I go, again! I'm headed for New York City this Thursday morning (July 24) for a few days stay at HSS (Hospital For Special Surgery) as I'm about to get a Total Knee replacement on my right knee. Wish me Luck!

This is supposed to be one of the best hospitals in the country for this type of surgery. The hospital is known for joint repair & replacement (mostly joints of the extremities). Many of the doctors are team physicians for Professional & Olympic teams including the NY Giants & NY Nets to name a few. Their logo is "Where the World comes to get back in the game!"

I'm supposed to be in the hospital for a few days then I'll be out of work for 4-8 weeks. (So I should be able to spend a little more time on the site during my time at home.) I'm told that it will take about a year for total recovery but, I should start to feel better by the time I'm ready to go back to work.

As for the aquarium...things are doing OK. I have one fish that has been a bully toward another one (same species) and it's managed to nibble away at the tail and dorsal fins of the poor fish it's been beating on; and now, the (one being picked on) hides all the time. I've also lost a few others of different varieties. It seems I've hit the max number of fish; every time I put a new one into the tank either it or another fish in the tank dies. AHHH, the balance of nature!

I need to replace my light fixture, too! About a week days ago the tank light failed to operate properly, after I took it apart I found that there was no way to repair it so, I need to buy a replacement hood. My search of the lfs produced nothing I was looking for, so I turned to the internet & one of my favs (Pet Mountain) and hit a home run with a single bulb unit for $57.99. Luck was with me because they're having a 50% sale and this is one of the items on sale! I'll need to order a few other things to make the total large enough ($75) for free shipping. That shouldn't be too hard, lol!

Well, I hope you have a great summer; and I'll post an update when I get home from the hospital.

Happy Holidays!
Hi Rick! It's been a while and I have to say that I wish I was able too spend more time on the computer and this site keeping in touch will the great people that I've met online. I'm not sure if you are aware of the fack that as I was wrking on the cabinet /stand for my newest aquisition (a 75 gallon tank), I managed to make contact between the dado blades of my tablesaw and the index finger of my left hand; (thankfully, I'm right hand dominant). It's been about 2 months now and the flesh has almost grow in; and it's looking much better than it had when it was first done. It will most likely be numb for some time to come yet but, hopefully, in time it will get better. I have lost some movement in the finger as well but again, I'm hopeful for improvment over time.

A belated Merry CHristmas to you and your family. Hope all is well and everyone is happy and healthy. As you can probably guess from reading the rest of this, it has been extremely hectic around here. I took the week before Christmas off from work so that I'd have time to make some long needed repairs to the kitchen cabinets, decorate the house (inside and out) and prepare to make a dinner for 7 other members of my side of the family (not including my wife & I) on Christmas Eve. Surf & Turf was on the menu (a roast of beef tenderloin (that came out fantastic) and baked shuffed shrimp (with homemade seafood - crab meat, lobster tail meat, and bay scallops - stuffing), mashed cheddar cheese potatoes, a green bean, carrot, onion and bacon medley & bread. Appetizers consisted of a platter of various cheeses, soupy & crackers and homemade crab cake (balls) (they were quite the hit!)
The wife and I also made Christmas cookies (about 8 dozen) & fudge for desert! Everyone had a good time!
Wishing you a happy, healthy, wealthy new year!

How are you and your critters doing? And how is the weather? It finally rained here. Yippee! We are so happy after months and months of dry beautiful sunny weather. One really can get tired of nice days plus we had some forest fires around and the rain got rid of them and the residual smoke.

It's cooler too but still hasn't frosted. Perfect weather, not too hot and not too cold. It's supposed to freeze this week and is overdue but I hope it doesn't. I like eating fresh vegetables from the garden and the frost will kill them.

Could I ask a great favour of you? I entered a photo of Eddie, big percheron horse, in Dover Saddlery's online photo contest. I would love to have your vote and you only need to vote once. The contest ends soon so the sooner you can vote the better. And if you would pass it along to your friends I'd appreciate that so much.

The contest is at www.doversaddleryphotocontest.com. No spaces or dashes. He is on page 10 in the Best Black & White category. The title is, "Tall, Dark, and Hansom."

Thank you so much!!!

Here's a vote for you and I hope you are also enjoying some nice autumn weather.

How is everything there? Busy it seems since you've been gone for 11 days. But then again, maybe you haven't. My profile often shows that when I've been here daily!

I was gone for a bit last month too because my accident free streak got broken. I crashed on my bike going down a mountain and somersaulted onto my head. Fortunately I was wearing a helmet but I had concussion that lasted over week. It wasn't very nice!

How is your smoke free diet going? I sure hope it's still going fine. Wishing you all the best and leaving a vote.

Hi Rick!
How's the summer going, so far for you? Mine could be better but, I can't complain too much, as summers past have been much worse!

Unfortunately, despite all of your GREATLY APPRECIATED efforts and votes, I didn’t get TOP SET-UP. But that’s alright, because, I think it’s just awesome that you and others put in the effort to get me “SOTW”; and I thank each and every one of those people that did vote for me!

I have been working at the “new” facility that EB has acquired and is setting up to be the Engineering & Design Facility. It’s a modern design building with very few straight walls and halls in the place, and the biggest pain is the 6-7 minute walk from the parking garage to the desk. The food in the Café is good but, it’s not cheap either and it’s about halfway between the garage and the desk. I’m led to believe that the folks running the cafeteria are done at the end of August, and then we’ll probably get some other caterer in there that puts out lesser quality food for about the same cost. (Ya just can’t win!)

As for my feet, they are holding their own. I went to see a physical therapist twice a week for about 3-4 months and she was able to work wonders with them in getting the swelling from the lymphedema to go down. She taught my wife & I how to do the massage ourselves and (so far) my feet haven’t blown up like they were (knock on wood on that one!) My insurance will only pay for 40 massage therapy visits per year, regardless of how many occurrences. So, I have left myself a few for the remainder of the year, just in case things get out of control again and I need to see the therapist again. My right knee has been giving me problems again. I tore cartilage in it when I played football in High School. It is now arthritic, and rubbing bone on bone with calcium deposits building up creating range of motion problems. I spoke with a doctor about it in April and he told me I was a good candidate for a knee joint replacement. Nothing I ‘m looking forward to but, it might be a real good thing! I’ve spoken with several folks that have had it done or know of someone who has, and everyone has had positive things to say about a knee replacement.

We have been getting in some riding time this year also and my wife loves riding her own bike. As a matter of fact, we are going out tonight to see a local favorite band play at a local beer joint in Westerly, RI (about 10-15 min away). I’m going to close for now, and I’ll try to keep in touch more often!

Come visit me, Pisciculi.

Hi Rick,
Thanks for visiting my Nano :). It has been a long day. Just returned a bit ago from Anchorage with my boss - to work at one of our other facilities. Thought I might stop at Petco or PetZoo on way home but too beat. I have to be very tired to pass up a LFS! Well, I get to take off 1/2 the day tomorrow. A great start to a week-end ;)

Hope you had a nice day

Hi Rick,
Thank you for the compliment to my Nano DSM NPT. Unfortunately I lost my Scarlet Badis. I had read they were sometimes difficult fish and required live foods most the time as well. I fed micro worms and there are tiny aquatic bugs I can see swimming around in it - but for whatever reason as I never saw any sign that something was wrong, they died within days of each other. Oh well, it is perfect as a cherry shrimp tank for now - so be it :)

Hope you are having a nice weekend!

Hi Rick,
How are you? All well here and I finished weekly water changes (whew!) and reaping the benefits with happy fish :)

Btw, I updated the Nano DSM NTP now that I have it filled with water, dry roots I found on Kenai Lake shore and 1 Scarlet Badis male fish :). There are 4 male cherry shrimp as well (although one is looking suspiciously like a female ;). The Scarlet Badis (dario dario) is a very tiny fish. The males get no larger than an inch and the females are supposedly smaller. I hope to find a female on Aquabid. Let me know what you think.

Also, I uploaded a video of my Angelfish fry :). Not great as I used my iPad but you can find it listed as "My Surprise Angelfish fry". Since than I moved 4 of the largest fry to my 50 gal to finish growing out and they are doing great.

Hope your weekend is going well,

Kathy

Hi Rick!
I want to thank you for all your support & hard work you've put into this "Set-up of the Week" & "Top Set-up" for me. I really do appreciate it!

The wife and I took a ride on the bikes about a month or so ago now and went to a fish shop in Framingham, Mass called Tropical Isle Aquarium. On the way home my knee started bothering me. When I was able to check it out, it was swollen and tender. It acted up for a few days, then calmed down. It is back to causing problems again! I saw an orthopedic doc and was told that I'm a good candidate for a knee replacement. That in mind, I'm not going to be able to do anything about it until next year. The swelling of my feet and legs; and subsiquent therapy visits has all but wiped me out of visits (our ins will only cover 40 visits per year) regardless of the number of circumstances. So I am waiting until the beginning of next year.

Lunchtime is up so I should be going any go back to work. Take care!

How are you doing? Did you have a nice Fathers' Day? It's really hot here now and I'm happy. The garden is finally beginning to take shape.

I have a funny anecdote to share about Pippin. I had him on the lawn and a friend went up and asked him for a kiss. He obliged, stopped munching his grass, and lifted up his nose for her to kiss. And then back he went to his lunch.

She decided she wanted another kiss and asked him for another one. He ignored her completely. She told my sister.

My sister went over to him and asked him for a kiss. Again, he was most obliging. She bragged that she could easily get another out of him. She asked him sweetly for another kiss. No acknowledgement. She cajoled, pleaded, begged, but to no avail.

So, they told me and I laughed. I went over and asked him for a kiss. Yep, you guessed it. He gave me ONE. Another friend tried, she got ONE. hehe I guess he has a strict one kiss policy.

My best to everyone there. And here's a vote.

Hi Rick!
Thanks very much for the votes and the help getting others to vote for me also. It was relly cool to see all the folks that came to my profile and voted. And thanks for keeping the votes going for me to try to get top setup, that would be awesome!

Hope you and all in the family are doing well. A while back you stated that you had problems with getting water at the vacation home, did you get them squared away?

I am in the middle of a new move at work. The supervisorI work for and our entire crew had to pack up all of our stuff and get it ready for the movers to take it to a new location (which I'm not too happy about!). I was traveling about 45 min to the town of Norwich, CT from my homr in North Stonington. I was able to park within 100 feet of the door to the building and as it was an old warehouse, everything is on one floor (very convenient for me to get around). The new location is in New London, CT. It's closer to home (about 30 min) but, There is a guard shack that all incoming vehicles must pass and you have to show a badge to get past it and enter the parking garage. From the garage to where I am to be sitting is going to take me about 10-15 min to walk there. I can see the backup of vehicles happening at the gate and will most likely have to get up and leave the house earlier than I do (did) have to to go to Norwich. The cubicles in Norwich are just about 6 feet high, affording some privacy. There were overhead cabinets and plenty of other storage available. In New London, the walls are 52" high and there is not much storage to speak of. we are limited to what peersonal items we can have in our area and they are going to try to enforce a dress code...slacks and collared shirts, only & they aren't giving us a clothing allowance either. They are going to try to run this "new office space" like a prison camp. I was told that management even made one of the employees take the American flag down because it was higher than the wall. Believe that crap! I asked to remain in Norwich because of medical reasons and it request fell on deaf ears! What a bunch of SHITE!!!

How are you doing? And how did the pump fix job go? I hope it wasn't too expensive. We figured out a few years ago that it costs more to have someone come and fix the problem than it does to get a new pump. So, we got a new pump and I put it in. It's still running and we saved some money that way.

Thanks for your comment on Melian's newest tricks movie. I'm glad you liked it. And no, I don't think it's creepy that you subscribe to our YouTube account. I think it's quite flattering! I take it then that you've seen Melian's latest? Speedy Saluki?
