I envy you. I have seen an SA puffer once on display at a pet store here in Hawaii. Are they easy to keep? I want to have a puffer other than the dwarf. I was thinking ocellated or red eyed. Those are only two commonly avaliable freshwater puffers here. Please vote mini planted for SOTW.

Merry Christmas everyone! We are back! The Cape Cod Crew:) I got a new laptop today which means we can blog again! WOOHOO! I was able to get all the photos onto her computer, but for some reason some wont upload. But I will put the photos that can go up, up. Hehe!

Jazz & Felix got two new toys, rawhide bones, and two new leashs! Felix was so excited. He chewed on his bone all morning, and finished it! He started chewing Jazzys bone.. hehe. Jazz was into the toys. Both seem pleased with their presents:) Freedom got a big apple. He loved it!

Our cousin Jimmy came home today. He was in Korea for the war. I was so happy to see him. He will be staying for a couple of weeks, and he got a new truck for christmas! That was my favorite present.

It feels so good to be able to blog again, and i hope to hear from everyone. We have missed everyone so much!

Hoping everyone had a very merry christmas, and got lots of good goodies! Hehe!

XOXO & Christmas Wishes,
Momma Nora, Jazz, Felix, Freedom (SAC) & The Bettas (FC)

I have always wanted to setup a species tank for a freshwater puffer ;). I don't dare though with my water...

Hope you had a good week-end :)

You are welcome. That is what this site is all about, learning and sharing ideas ;). Btw, what is that fish in the upper left corner of your Desert Sand profile picture. Looks interesting...

Headed to Anchorage tomorrow for our bi-annual shopping trip and planning to go to PetZoo. Hope to find some more Pygmy Corys or Kuhli loaches (if healthy looking the ones at another LFS looked so starved) to try out in my Betta 5 gal.

Have a nice rest of the week,

Rainwater Fish :)
Thank you so much for liking my Chocolate Delight (which is the "rainwater" described 50 gal video) Sorry to mislead but the description of rainwater means the type of fish I keep - that all come from and prefer softer water. The water out of our well is very soft with a PH of 6.6 - 6.8 depending on season with low dissolved solids. I have a meter that reads TDS (total dissolved solids) and the average can be 400-700 but mine is consistently below 200 at 128-147. My fish love it ;)

Regarding a 4 hr siesta I got the idea from a book by Diana Walstad " Ecology of the Planted Aquarium". She states a 4 hr siesta allows C02 regeneration. And that with continuous 12 hour light plant photosynthesis depletes most of the C02 in the afternoon. This means that plants during the afternoon are competing for a dwindling supply of C02 and algae which is more adept than plants at taking in C02 gains an advantage. With a full 4 hours (a study was done) siesta in midday allows C02 to regenerate to almost pre-dawn levels.

I have been following this method over a year now and along with adding organic carbon (flourish excel) in small amounts during water changes I am convinced it works. In addition, the lights go out when I am at work and extends the time in the evening they can be on. I use 6 hrs on / 4 hrs off / 6 hrs on. And one more ;) it mimics a natural condition - temporary overhead clouding LOL

I hope this was helpful. I really recommend Diana Walstad's book if you are interested in low tech planted aquariums or want to learn the biological cycles or processes that happen in our tanks :). Its much more information than the average aquarium book...

I do try to clean them as much as possible to keep the water warm. I try my best to care for them as best as possible, cause im crazy & do see fish as pets.

So we have 2 new members to our "gang of bettas." One the 3rd, i went to petco & saw two bettas that were very close to death, & im crazy so i had to buy both. One is a delta tail male & his name is "Job" (Joe-b, after the character in the bible who suffered in the beginning & had a blessed future). The other is a baby female named "Aiko" (meaning little love in Italian). Both seem to be acting much better than they were the first day, but i still want to buy some vitamin supplements just to make sure they are healthy. My phone had broken yesterday, so i cant get any pictures up of the fish, Freedom, or Jazz & Felix till maybe next month. I will as soon as possible get pictures of Job & Aiko.

Hope your keeping cool!
