Regarding loached
The Loaches I had in the Hillstream tank are a colder water verity and don't do well in tropical tanks. I also would say they a rough gravel sub straight may harm any loaches because they have whisker like things around their mouth the will get cut up by the gravel. You might want to try fresh water shrimp like cherry reds or event ghost shrimp I would try the a ghost shrimp first to make sure it will not just end up as lunch for your fish since they are rather inexpensive. Another option is snails but they can become problematic with population and some will eat plants. I have Malaysian Trumpet snails in most of my tanks and they don’t eat live plants they will also turn up and aerate the gravel. I would recommend at least 1-2” of sand/gravel in a tan or brown colour of you don’t want these guys to show up as much. Just be sure you really want snails in your tank because once you have them you may not be able to easily get rid of them (also watch the live plants you add as they will hitch a ride on them to your tank).

Keeping Live Plants
Replying to you inquiry to live plants:

In my tank I have a 1" layer of clay kitty litter, then a 1" layer of Standard peat moss, topped with 2-3" layer of a fine gravel / coarse sand mix that I got from the local gravel supplier (they called it filter sand and it is used in septic beds). I have been known to add Jobbs palm and fern fertilizer sticks occasionally but I don’t add any liquid fertilizers. I do have a 2 lamp 24" florescent overdriven fixture running a Sylvania plant and aquarium bulb and a Philips daylight delux (6500k) bulb. I the plant are doing well enough for me as I don't care to invest hundreds of dollars on Co2 and better lighting. The plant in my tank are rather easy spices as well just Vals, Hygro, Java Fern , Anubius, Java Moss, and Amazon Swords.

Oh, I see. Coolness. I have one artificial plant in my tank and a few floating live ones. I'd like to get some more live ones because they look so cool! The only problem is they come apart and get stuck in the intake of the filter...and the fact that real plants die. lol...

Cool! Thanks for the vote. Left one for you too. What's a pine plant? Can you find them in most pet stores like PetSmart? I want to get some now! :)
