Left a vote
You can probably guess by my name why I left a vote! I actually have about 20-23 tanks of assorted fish but the discus, angels and guppies are my favorites. Currently raising about 100 fry from my Koi angels hatched 4/10 and am awaiting fry from eggs from my red discus, who , of course, they will raise initially. Where did you get your Discus from? Some of mine came from Discus Hans, The Hidden Reef in PA (amazing selection of discus for a lfs) and Al Sabetta/ctdiscus.com (check out his forum at SimplyDiscus.com if you haven't already

Hi
Do you have to put additional beams up in the basement to hold a tank that size ? We had to when we had a 135 gallon tank.
Thanks for the compliment on my koi angel. I just had to take my male (black marble angel) back to the store over the weekend. He was getting very nasty with the female. He had ripped her fins and her side fin was almost gone. She is an original fish for me so I didn't want him to kill her. My whole tank seems more at peace with him gone now. I think he was picking on all the fish in the tank. Leaving another vote.

Hello
Sorry that I haven't talked to you for a while. It's just that 7th Grade is full of work, homework, and projects. About my Discus Aquarium I have about $350 from my birthday. So I went online figured out how much everything costs. And I'll need money from Christmas to get what I want and need. It is very EXPENSIVE. I have found some beautiful Discus for a lot less at this website called www.somethingsphishy.com. So I am saving up my money and hopefully everything for fish will drop a lot in price after Cristmas. Here's a Vote. ( By the way how are your fish doing?

Hiya!
I hope all is well with you and your discus! My apologies for the late reply. Your pictures are looking great. That is a splendid piece of bog wood you have there. I have on occasion bought stock from the far east. The fish were great although it was expensive, coming from Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. They are priced in US $ which is such a shame. 1 US$ : 7.80 ZAR, so by our standards its over the top priced. Fish from breeders like Jack Wattley for example is really out of our reaches. A lot of US based breeders and farms seem not too keen on delivery outside the US/Canada region. But they're expensive like I was saying. I have found a breeder in a place called Potchefstroom who has a lovely place for breeding discus. He also does other fish like angels, neon and others. And there's a Taiwanese dude who's discus tank is featured on my discus page. He also has a fish farm and is bringing in fish from the far east. So some positive developments taking place. Also the guy I buy my fish from is expanding in a big way. He's been putting up tanks like crazy, he also promised me some good discus soon. This is the same guy who got the Israeli stock. They were exquisitely coloured, up to R1250 for fully grown, well rounded and champion stock. But that is out of my budget. I settled for the not so great discus at R300 a pop, which in my opinion is still pretty good. The one thing that local pet stores do is sometimes overcharge on fish cos they know we got only few places to go to. Take care dude and

HELP
I am so sorry for the cut and paste and the begging post, but I need yourhelp! I know I have already asked, but I need to ask again, just in case you may not have gotten a chance to do so. Last I looked the person that was in second in the photo contest all of the sudden was winning, I now have two more votes (thanks to all of you that have voted already!) The contest ends at 6:43 pm tomorrow (I don't know if this is east coast or west coast time the site is called pacific coral farm, so I think it may be on Ca time), anyway, here is the link, you have to take out all of the hyphens and spaces. Before I thought you had to register on the site and the forum, but now realize its just the free forum, and you don't have to give a lot of personal info! I am sorry to those of you that had a hard time figuring it out before! All you have to to do is copy and paste the link, but remember to take out the spaces, and put it in your browser then hit go! Once you are there, on the right side of the screen you will see register, click that, register, they will send you an email, then all you have to do is follow the link and then instead of clicking register, click login, its instant, the message comes right away! My picture is number 1, the crab and anenome. Again, I really really would love to win this gift certificiate and would be more than willing to repay the favor! Thanks so much guys, by the way you can only vote once, unless of course you register your husband, cat, dog, fish etc! LOL! Take care and thanks so much in advance, and again thanks to those that have already voted! If you have more than one page, like I always, I am blogging one, but voting all! Take care and have a wonderful night! LINK: http://www.pacificcoralfa- rm.com/forum/viewtopic. php?f=2&t=13 Remember to remove the spaces!

Greetings!
That is just lovely, a 165gal is plenty space for keeping a large number of discus! Yes, they do enjoy the space and its great that you have a large group, they do tend to do best in a group and the water parameters can hold for longer too. The yellow is a cross pigeon blood and sunrise yellow, pretty rare in these parts. I can imagine your not securing that fish, it happens to me a lot. I now order them from a store where I have been shopping for many years. Thing is there are a number of hobbyists in South Africa, but it is not as organized as it is in the US. Our stores get some great stock, particularly marine stock, but discus are not very commonly kept and so to secure a really good specimen is a mission. When they do order, the stock is from a place in KwaZulu where its perpetually warm or the region close to the Limpopo River, towns like Hoedspruit and Lephalale. That is where most of our local breeders are established, where there is abundant rain and warmer temps than down here. I’m about 35km from Johannesburg and the nearest store is in town, some way off. We are saved from any extremes in weather here/ From time to time the stores collect orders from a few hobbyists and then purchase the fish from the far east and Europe as well as Israel. I didn’t know they breed such good fish in Israel. I got a cobalt blue which has shown sterling qualities like good roundness and shape, as well as good growth. Sometimes one finds the stock to be of a sub-standard and those specimens don’t grow too well and eventually turn out to be waifs that die prematurely. Are you using UV sterilization? That be a great investment mate, it will effectively cut out infections and hence prevent diseases from spreading, specifically Hexamita. Anyways, its been good chatting. Take care and have a lovely weekend! Cheers! Stokes

Saltwater lights?
So are they metal halide or pc or regular flourescent that you have now? My system is by Aquatic life. It has 4 t-5's and moon lights. Teh blue t-5s come on for about an hour of sunrise then the full lights go on then they go off and only the blue lights remain for about an hour to simulate sunset. Then the moon lights in the system kick in. Wow, the first night the system was hooked up my angels went crazy. They all seemed to glitter under the leds and they say that it increases breeding activity. It's so nice because o the built in timers. I love them!! I would think that MH would be way too intense for discus. When I told the salesman when I was looking at new lights what I planned (adding the discus) he sent me to this model. The t-5's he explained were like watching your television in high def, and he is right. I could see a difference right away. First I had purchased a cheaper two bulb t-5 unit and everyone had always complimented me on how crystal clear my tank was, when we put the first little t5 set on it was like OMG I can't believe what I am seeing in that gravel! Then I travedl to a huge fish store and talked to the stores marine biologist for recommendations, I have never regretted the system!

Do you have moon lights?
I bet the discus would be beautiful with them. I have said I was going to add discus to my angel tank with moon lights, but I am so into my saltwater now that that is all I spend money on! LOL I will get them one day though! HOpe you are enjoying them, setting up a tank that size is a lot of work!

Hi!
Sorry for the late reply. thanks for your kind words and compliments! Its good to hear that you've been bitten by the discus bug! They are my favourite fish and I do wish I had more space for more discus setups. I've been obsessed on and off for about 15 years now. I recall the first time I saw one, I enquired about it and the pet store owner told me to get a bot of experience before I try keeping them. It wasn't a month later and I was ready for them. Haven't looked back since, well actually I have lost entire stocks, but lets not go there. Back in those days keeping them alive was a great challenge and they were shrouded in mystery. Well mate, it was great chatting. Do keep in touch, I do not have any friends in the US who currently keep discus and it would be great to share experiences. Take care. Cheerio! Stokes

Yesterday was a wonderful day that I really needed! We took my mom and three youngest to the sweetcorn festival in Millersport, OH. It is a great hometown little festival that we found a couple of years ago. Its a lot of fun. Two of my kids got in the corn eating contest, and the outhouse race! That was so funny! They put my 10 year old daughter inside, and they seatbelt them in then my son and another boy they were paired with raced down this cement walk, circled around a barrel and raced back pulling this outhouse! It is just too cute! Mom and I gambled some and played bingo, the kids played games then at the end of the night we watched Tracy Lawrence! It was a lot of fun. I litterally crashed today! My son and husband went fishing and I slept on and off all day. I felt so lay, but I needed it. I have not been sleeping and I think it just caught up with me. Today one of my clown fish got stuck in the tube to my fuge and died, its so sad to watch the female going all over the tank looking for him. It even over flowed my tank a little! Hope your weekend has been a good one. Going to be lazy and cut and paste this for everyone tonight!

That 165 sounds so pretty! I am so jealous! You will have to let me know when you are ready for corals, if you want added to my mailing list (dward17@gmail.com) send me an email. I am in the process of starting up a coral propogration business. My supply is low right now because I sell them faster than I can grow them. I just got fed up with the pet store prices. We are phasing out my daughters guppy breeding, she got bored with it, and moving on to a saltwater fish room.

Advice!
I am more than happy to help you in setting up a salt tank. My email is dward17@gmail.com It may be easier to do it that way. First though, do you know anyone that has a tank? The best thing you could do is get some wter from somone that has a tank set up when they do a water change. I was able to start mine with virtually no cycling. Not exactly none, but close to it. Where are you located? Actually I am opening a coral business and am going to start breeding clowns then branch out to some other fish. I got tired of paying pet store prices. I plan on selling my clowns for instance for $5-$10, depending on whether or not I can keep a rotifer culture going so it doesn't cost me as much to feed the fry. I have done freshwater for years, and I researched salt for years, now that I am on the salt side, I have just started to phase out my fresh tanks. I will always keep my angels though, and still plan on adding discus to it.
