Hiya! hope you're well. Thanks for stopping by. Well its been a short two, mainly because I'm on leave and time flies when you're having fun. Its officially my last day as I return to work on Monday. I've finally been abl to catch up with life at home. It has been raining every afternoon/evening and its quite humid and hot. This month being the final month of summer, but the summer heat should go on until the end of April. I've redone my tanks and spent much time trimming and pruning the plants. How are things on your side of the world? Seems the winter has been pretty harsh in the northern hemisphere. Otherwise its bee nice living in shorts and sandals these past couple of weeks. Wishing you a lovely weekend, take care. Cheers! Stokes

There are not too many people here that know I'm from Africa, but there are good friends I've made on this site these past years and I love it that people are connected by way of the Internet. Living in Africa is sometimes great, sometimes challenging and sometimes plain unpleasant. I live in the north east of the country west Johannesburg. Soweto is about 30km and Pretoria around 60km. Now we are getting bouts of rain with sunshine and some more rain. Although it is summer and we do have some of our hottest days, we have much hotter days during the dry season after winter. I live out of town but work in the Sandton district of Johannesburg. South Africa has two faces. on the one side you have a strong working class and elites and on the other the poor. There are first world parts and then there are third world parts. Some drive a car, others take a taxi and then others own horses and use a cart. Roads can vary from top quality in the city to pot holed roads with a bad surface. In terms of infrastructure I think we're much better off then say Botswana or Mozambique, we have first world standard facilities but it is mostly near the cities. The land varies from the warm tropical humid Indian Ocean coasts to the stark beaches of the cold Atlantic coast, the natural beauty of the Cape, Cape point, Agulhas point, KNysna, the Garden Route, Eastern Cape, Kwazulu-Natal, St. Lucia Estuary, Northern Zululand, The Karoo, the Highveld, the Lowveld, the Kalahari and the Bushveld. The abundance of wildlife and some the greatest national parks in Africa. I can't possibly tell you everything, but over time, I hope to share with you more about South Africa and Africa. Well, until next time, i bid you farewell. Tot siens! (which is how you'd say bye in Afrikaans)

Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes! And I'm sorry for the late reply. In Africa we do not celebrate Thanksgiving, but I am quite aware of the centuries old traditions and I understand the spirit of the holiday. Also thanks to American TV and movies which makes up the bulk of what we watch on TV, which have enlightened us about how Americans celebrate July 4th, Halloween, and Christmas. We have Christmas of course, but we have it in the heat of summer and so that kind of skews the northern traditions of Christmas associated with snow and winter and turkey. Turkey is not so popular round here, I have seen one maybe twice in my life and they look more like pheasant here than they do turkey. Halloween is not observed here and I wish it was. That is a really neat holiday and I would love to revel in those festivities one day. Maybe Thanksgiving too, to give thanks for all the foreign aid ;-D Take care! Cheers!

Happy Thanksgiving!
I know that I'm a couple of days late (actually, you're in Canada so I'm a month late!) but I hope you had a wonderful day of celebration with family and friends.

Happy Thanksgiving! I am thankful for all of my friends both on here and at home. One can not have too many!

Leaving a vote of thanks for being such a good friend.

How are you doing? Did you have a nice halloween? We don't really celebrate it out here. Too far from civilization. The kids go into town for trick or treating. I expect the dogs are happy about that. No one to disturb their evening peace.

Guess what! I got a really nice surprise in winning top setup! And then I looked at my e-mail again and saw that I had also won critter of the month with my squirrel, Acorn. She's the cutest little thing and I'm happy that she's in the spotlight this month on the Small Animal Channel.

Now that it's turned cold the fish are steadily turning into the vegetative orange blob state. I expect we won't see much action from them until late spring.

They got to play a small part in a horror movie that I just made. It's the featured video of the month on the Dog Channel. I'd love for you to go over and see it. It's called A Tail of Horror.

Actually the video of the month on the Horse Channel is also mine! It's the tribute I made for my friend on there who died in September.

I hope you're all staying warm there. We've had some snow already but it was mixed with rain. So, instead of making everything pretty (snows one and only pro) everything is cold, wet, and slippery.

Thanks for asking about Eddie. The contest results have been postponed until the 15th. So, we have to be patient. It's not easy keeping my fingers crossed for that long!

Here's a vote for you!

How are you doing? Still warm here, I can't believe it. November is drawing closer and we still haven't had a frost. I took a couple of the dogs for a run this evening like I usually do and we had a very close encounter.

Melian (saluki) and Kermit (yorkie) went ahead of me and suddenly they pounced. With their curious noses buried in something white and fluffy with some suspicious black stripes immediately my danger senses sent out loud warnings. Skunk! I yelled at them in my most powerful panicky voice and fortunately they both froze and backed away. Phew! The skunk slid into a culvert and didn't spray. Close call!

Fish are doing great. Gradually turning into their winter vegetative state but still occasionally begging for food.

Glad to hear that your remodelling job is coming along nicely. Here's a vote for you.

Thank you so much for stopping by with congratulations for my surprise setup of the week win. It was so nice to log in on Monday and see my pond up there in the spotlight!

The fish are doing great and since we amazingly still haven't had a frost they're still pretty active and shamelessly begging for food whenever someone walks by.

How is it there? Cold yet?

Here's a vote for you and thanks again for stopping by. I'll keep you updated on Eddie. Won't know till next month.

How are you and your critters doing? And how is the weather? It finally rained here. Yippee! We are so happy after months and months of dry beautiful sunny weather. One really can get tired of nice days plus we had some forest fires around and the rain got rid of them and the residual smoke.

It's cooler too but still hasn't frosted. Perfect weather, not too hot and not too cold. It's supposed to freeze this week and is overdue but I hope it doesn't. I like eating fresh vegetables from the garden and the frost will kill them.

Could I ask a great favour of you? I entered a photo of Eddie, big percheron horse, in Dover Saddlery's online photo contest. I would love to have your vote and you only need to vote once. The contest ends soon so the sooner you can vote the better. And if you would pass it along to your friends I'd appreciate that so much.

The contest is at No spaces or dashes. He is on page 10 in the Best Black & White category. The title is, "Tall, Dark, and Hansom."

Thank you so much!!!

Here's a vote for you and I hope you are also enjoying some nice autumn weather.

Thanks for the vote! There are only two discus that I still have left that are depicted in that setup. I have another discus setup that I have not posted here. It is awfully difficult to find good discus here. I have a friend who owns a fish shop so every time he gets realy good ooking ones, he lets me know. Juvenile discus for around ZAR 180.00 roughly US$25.00. He has taken to ordering from Israel instead of the far east. Much better quality fish, well rounded bodies, lovely patterns that one can discern while still young. I had a bit of a disaster happen last year in May. I bought fish from one store and mixed them with the israeli fish, the eastern stock got ill real quick and many died. Now I keep them seperate. I see you have an impressive lionfish! Very cool! Take care. Cheers! Stokes.

HI! I'm Stokes, I got a message from you some time ago. Sorry bout the late reply. You've got great pictures, great setups! I love the driftwood and the plants you have in your discus tank. Great looking fish too! Here's a vote for you! I'm located in Krugersdorp, South Africa. I hope to be more regular on this site. I used to be habitual on this site but lately have been a bit slack, so I thought I'd get online and check what's happening here. I've made some pretty good friends here. I'd love to hear from you, a serious discus keeper like myself. Take care. Cheers! Stokes

I got my living room back, stepson is about moved out, so my daughter has taken over his room until her move out time comes. This means I get lots of time to read, relax and watch my 55 in action. I'm still trying to get decent pics and get it profiled. Now that it's no longer a 'bedroom' but a living room again, that should prove to be easier now. Temps a mild, dry but mild and family is all happy and healthy lately, including fur and fin babies. Hope all is well with you too, and that you'll get some relax time in soon!
