The 1 inch rule is not necessarily nonsense. It has been the norm in most applications for decades. That rule started primarily when freshwater tropical fish were the norm. Where it doesn't work is when you have a 10 inch fish in a 10 gallon tank. Even a beginner would no that a 10 gallon would be woefully inadequate for a 10 inch fish. For most beginners, it would be fine.

*Cringe* There is so much misinformation in fish-keeping, but virtually everyone knows the 1" of fish per gallon "rule" is nonsense. It's not even applicable as a general guideline. I'm very surprised to see it on this website... perhaps it was an oversight.
