my 2 cents !! yes iam late at an answer for you but been busy as far as what kind of filter to use iam old fashion and use an aqua clear filter by hagen i like it because i can change the three stages myself with bulk items that i get and it has a sponge that you just rinse out the charcol i change myself with a bag i brought and reuse with a refill of bulk charcol and the bio section you dont do anything with because it has good bacteria that is its purpose so i find it is cost effective and i get plenty of coments on how clear the water is i like it and the only down side that i can think of is that the pump is external and if it leaks that could be a problem but i keep the gasket lubed and check it monthly to see how it is doing there are pumps that self prime but at the time i wanted as little inside the tank as possiable and liked the three stage setup it offers there you go good luck hope it helped the captain
