Mistakes Happen
Last year at about the same time of year I was a few months into starting my reef tank. I had a few corals a small colony of green mushrooms, star polyps, a xenia, galexia and some button polyps. Everything was going great for about two months except for my galexia, it was slowly dying. The cause is still unkown to me at this time. My other corals where thriving along with my excitement until I got some bad advise. I'm always trying to improve my reef keeping skills and searching for ways to do so. Well I've always kept my tank on the warm side 78°, the advice was to slowly raise the temperature to 82°. At first I raised it to 80° and everything was still thriving. After a couple weeks of being pleased with the results I raised the temp again to 82°. It took about a month and all my coral had died,I was perplexed. My water parameters where always testing excellent. I even brought in water samples to my local fish store to be tested. I asked around a bit hoping to get some answers with no luck. My tank ran at that temp 82° for six months my fish never showed signs of stress durring that period except for one my Flame Angel that is no longer with us do this event. I eventually on my own and from a little research I slowly in the course of a month dropped my temperature down to 76°-78°. All is well now except it's alot harder now to convince my wife into letting buy coral now. Every so often I'll sneak a frag into my tank but the days of buying mature coral are sometime away. So I guess mistakes happen, the important thing is to learn from them and move on.
