New Around Here Hello! I don't know if this is for me to post my own thoughts, or for people to comment on my page....but I'm going to share a couple thoughts anyway! =) This is my first attempt at a saltwater tank. My husband has a 75 gal, and I bought this 14 gal. Nano because it was a great price, and came with a critter I really wanted. When I bought the tank it housed a couple Zoa's, a Clownfish (in the picture), and a Lime Green Mantis Shrimp. All I truly wanted was the mantis when I bought the tank, so I quickly sold the Clown, who was anything but a clown and terrorized the tank. Even the mantis gave him a wide berth, so off he went to a new home. Sadly, not long after, I lost the mantis. I thought he had buried himself in the sand bed to molt, but he never came back up. =( That was when I realized having a small tank can be a big hassle. He basically disintegrated in the tank, and I was never able to get his 'body' out of the tank. This of course spiked the nitrates, and my zoa's and xenia's began to look very bad. In a larger tank his passing would not have been so much of an issue, but I had a big problem on my hands. I moved all the corals out that I could, and into my husband's tank, then did a 50% water change. Which to my surprise made things WORSE. That's when we discovered that my husband mixed the makeup water with almost double the amount of salt mix he should have. Again, in his tank, it was not a big deal and only changed his salinity by about .005. Mine took a huge spike to almost .032. YIKES!! So over the next week, we did 50% changes every other day, to get the salinity back down, and twice a week the next week to bring the nitrates back down to 0. That was about 2 weeks ago, and I am finally seeing the xenia's and the remaining zoa's coming back and opening up completely. I plan to move my zoa's back from his tank this week, so we can pick up where we started. =) Wish me luck! |
