Greetings! That is just lovely, a 165gal is plenty space for keeping a large number of discus! Yes, they do enjoy the space and its great that you have a large group, they do tend to do best in a group and the water parameters can hold for longer too. The yellow is a cross pigeon blood and sunrise yellow, pretty rare in these parts. I can imagine your not securing that fish, it happens to me a lot. I now order them from a store where I have been shopping for many years. Thing is there are a number of hobbyists in South Africa, but it is not as organized as it is in the US. Our stores get some great stock, particularly marine stock, but discus are not very commonly kept and so to secure a really good specimen is a mission. When they do order, the stock is from a place in KwaZulu where its perpetually warm or the region close to the Limpopo River, towns like Hoedspruit and Lephalale. That is where most of our local breeders are established, where there is abundant rain and warmer temps than down here. I’m about 35km from Johannesburg and the nearest store is in town, some way off. We are saved from any extremes in weather here/ From time to time the stores collect orders from a few hobbyists and then purchase the fish from the far east and Europe as well as Israel. I didn’t know they breed such good fish in Israel. I got a cobalt blue which has shown sterling qualities like good roundness and shape, as well as good growth. Sometimes one finds the stock to be of a sub-standard and those specimens don’t grow too well and eventually turn out to be waifs that die prematurely. Are you using UV sterilization? That be a great investment mate, it will effectively cut out infections and hence prevent diseases from spreading, specifically Hexamita. Anyways, its been good chatting. Take care and have a lovely weekend! Cheers! Stokes |
