Not quite sure that I have ever heard of a cichlid playing dead... I do know that the clown loach will play dead while it sleeps. I would ask if you have enough hiding places for him? This could be the reason that he is hiding out in the vine. Its kind of a comfort thing. Ever since I rearranged my tank to have more hiding spots I see my fish out all the time and playing. They do seem much more happy. I had a yellow lab for a while then my convicts got sick of him and then... Its not always a good thing to mix African and South American cichlids. I tried! Hopefully we can remedy this problem.
