Hi everyone and thanks for looking and voting. Well, here I am twenty years later, trying my hand at aquarium keeping. I did quite a lot of research and prep so knowing what I know now, I must say that I did everything wrong way back when. Nitrogen cycle, beneficial backteria, dead fish - ah, who cared. So as a growup I'm ready to do this right. I've been toying with the idea of an aquarium for few years, so ten days ago I went to Petco and purchesed 20 gal kit. I must say the technolody has improved alot since I was a kid. Anyway, Saturday I brought the kit home, rinsed it all, and set it up. Added the water conditioner and waited for the system to stabilize so I can add few fish. There is a pic of the set up right after. Boy what a sterille aquarium - haha. Anyway, first thing Sunday I went back to the store and got few plants, test kit, and other "gotta have' items. Then next day at the evening it was time to get fish. I had a hard time to decide which fish to get to start the nitro. cycle going, but finaly I settled on Ballon Belly Molly and Black Skirt Tetra. Instead algee eater I thought I get a couple crabs to keep the bottom clean. Everything went smoothly, fish seem to got comfortable right away, started eating right away, crabs started exploring - cool, everything was going according to plan. I do the water test every other day and a 10% water changes. So far eveything is as it should be. Ph is 7.2, ammonia is slowly climbing, and as of yet no traces of nitrate or nitrite. On Thursday I lost one of the crabs (sob, sob). I did not learned in time that they are somewhat brackish water animals. I promptly got the fresh water aquarium salt and added it to the specifications on the box. Fish seem to be fine, and the other crab is well. The only thing I worry about is whether the salt will affect my plants. Anyway, thats about it for now. I'll test my water today after work and see what's what.
