try some industrial strength graffitti remover. that stuff eats through anything. it can be pricy though, the cheap stuff wont work. if you use that make sure to wash the heck out of the tank so that the chemicals dont reside. if you dont want to do that, use a foaming type cleaner like scrubbing bubbles, or a tile/ glass cleaner, and use a razor blade to scrap off the materials.
ya, i know about the whole swimming in your pee thing, thats why if you get a bigger filter and change the cartridge every other month it will clear those toxins out. i havent cleaned out the rocks or anything in my tank since last june and all my fish are completely happy. they seem to be happier when i keep my hands out of the tank. like i said, i have a filter rated for a 75 gallon on my 20. its clean for sure.
