Hello! Hello! I have not been directly affected by the rioting, mostly because it hasn’t happened in our township and foreigners in our area enjoy freedom. However, closer to work, its really gotten out of control. In Johannesburg they have targeted Indian, Pakistani and Chinese enterprises. They loot and burn the places down. Yesterday I was very upset, I saw a picture of a man on fire in one of the papers. There were policemen and paramedics trying to help the guy, but he was fortunate enough to die, I couldn’t live with such burn scars, I’d want to die too if God forbid anything like that happen. As bad as it sounds, we have become accustomed to violence and its hardened us to some degree, but you know mob mentality. When they are done with the foreigners, what says they won’t kill a certain group or groups of people they deem ‘enemies’. We all saw what happened in Rwanda and Burundi and if this is allowed to go on by the government, then surely they must be in favour. The government, by the way, has refused to send in the defence force, one wonders if the government is waiting for thousands to die before doing anything. A lot of these people are illegally here anyway, but they continue to linger in the danger zone or outside the police station seeking protection from the marauding mob. The customs and immigration officials should have at least taken them to safety or deport them to their countries, instead of keeping them there, until they get killed or hurt. Today I heard a pregnant lady gave birth in the cold of the morning outside the police station. Her husband killed and her home looted and burnt. The humanitarian crisis developing is off the wall, people are contributing and churches and charities from all faiths have been accommodating some of the people, as well as daily feeding schemes to keep everyone fed. I just hope the government gets off their butts and send in the military before more people die. Take care and be well. Kind regards, Stokes |
