Greetings!
Hi! Well, I speak in English most of the time, but it is with a different accent than in the states, sounds more like an English accent, but not too thick as in a London accent. We use the metric system to measure and temperature in the Celsius format as opposed to Farenheit. We call gas petrol, friends mates, bakkies are pickup trucks, braais are barbeques and a lot more. Then there's Afrikaans, which is another language that origniates in Europe, in Holland to be exact. It eveloved over 400 years and its an independant language which has its own set of grammar apart from the Dutch language. African languages such as Zulu, Xhosa and Sotho are true African Bantu languages and are somewhat influenced by English and Afrikaans to some degree, some words having been borrowed. Most people in South Africa speak Zulu, followed by Afrikaans, then Xhosa and then English. So English is pretty down the list, but it is the most common language. Safe to say if you speak English you will get by, as most people speak it as a second or third language. Hope this answers your question about calling things differently in Africa. Here's another vote mate! Cheers! Stokes
