Hi! Hi Bill, good to hear from you mate! I’m relieved that it wasn’t something I said. Sorry to hear that you were in hospital. An eye infection from arthritis you say, that is rather strange. I hope you are feeling better and that the infection has been healed. These days we are increasingly causing pathogens to be more resistant to antibiotics especially. I once saw this program on tv where the physicians in Eastern Europe use bacteriophages to deal with drug resistant strains of infections. Very interesting stuff. May I suggest you try out medications containing African potato, which is rich in sterols and sterolins, which will alleviate some pain as it lubricates joints. Check with the pharmacist. This really works. I used to go thru those periods myself , where self-pity takes over, so I understand. Yes, its spring time for you guys. We not having much of an autumn yet, we still sizzling in the heat. Its still very hot and sticky, though it is easing up in the evenings and the mornings are fresh and cool. But in a couple of months, things will change somewhat. We also do a spring clean after winter, mostly because winter is also our dry season and during that time the dust is blown by the wind and it settles over everything. So just after the first rains of spring, we wash our curtains and blankets and corner to corner cleaning. Here there are maids that take care of that kind of stuff. It’s a norm here to have a maid, no matter you be rich or you be poor. Spiders are numerous here, the baboon spider is basically an African version of a tarantula. The crab spiders generally move sideways and many species have evolved to live in flowers, as you can imagine the agents of pollination being caught and devoured. Button spiders are highly venomous. There venom is extremely toxic. I see a lot of tarantulas sold at the pet stores these days. I don’t like them much, but different strokes for different folks ‘ey? Yeah, cookouts are great fun. There is another way we cook outside. It involves cooking on a fire in one of those cast iron pots. We call it potjiekos, which mean ‘pot food’ or food cooked in a pot. They usually cook bobotie, which is a Cape specialty, but any pot roast recipe or stew comes out great. There’s also biltong which is meat, either beef or venison that is seasoned and left out to dry. The result is absolutely great! We also dry sausage, known as wors, which is like whurst (German sausage), but its made from stuffing spiced minced meat into a thouroughly cleaned large intestine of an ox. Its wonderful! Now this sausage is dried and eaten too. You can try it out for yourself, just take some sausages out your freezer, thaw them and hang them out to dry. I promise you, you will be ever so surprised with the flavour. All this talk of food is making me hu |
